Greetings from sunny London

Hey all.

Not my first post, but I've already had amusing off-topic distraction, and a super helpful game review, so I'll definitely be around a lot more :)

I'm 38 years old, Australian, work in software development in London, and have just 'properly' discovered Go. Someone taught me to play in my early twenties but my mind was elsewhere and I never really played. Like a few other things, I wish I'd got into it earlier because I suspect the learning curve would have been steeper as a young person, but it is what it is. I'm presently playing on OGS because I find being able to dip in and out of games really convenient, and 9x9 almost exlcusively. Some time in the near future I'm sure I'll branch out into KGS and maybe try and find a Go club near me (I live in Acton, if anybody has a hint).

Outside of Go and work, I skydive a lot. It's pretty cold right now so my other obsession can take a back seat to this one :)

Jolly good to have you mate!

I would find a club if possible it is a different feeling playing live.

I would love to see a photo of 2 skydivers in free fall with a GO board between them like their playing. But the bowls could be a safety hazard for those below.

Welcome to L19. Is there a London in Australia then? Or do you work in the UK and are from Australia? (I only ask because I rarely here London, UK described as "sunny." ;)

This is the closest I could find. That and of course the xkcd chess roller coaster meme where there is a go picture.

Should be possible to make a Go board and stones with velcro :-)

Howdy again, and welcome! I look forward to your eventual "yet another first single-digit-kyu post". (Sorry, computer game reference for the uninitiated).

I suggest you try the Melton Mowbray pub sometime. I think that is the most active and most fun option that is easily reachable for you.

Go while skydiving doesn't appeal to me; I already have too many floating groups.

PeterHB, thank you! That sounds like it would work perfectly for me, at least in winter ;)

(Yes, London, Great Britain. My wife, who is English, for reasons that remain somewhat mysterious does not want to live in Australia. So I have become one of those controversial immigrant types. London is pretty awesome though, I love living here.)

So, my OGS rating reached 1200 (9k) for the first time last night.

I feel like it will be a temproary hike and I'll fall back to 10 before I bounce and get back again permanently, but still - you did say 'first' :)

(Actually I was fairly sure that would happen when I reached 10k and it didn't, so who knows.)

I could trawl the data and make it into a "After 143 games, 1046 moves with 659064 gold pieces" and so on post but I'm really tired!
