How about creating an IRC Channel for L19?
Of course chatting on KGS is possible, but it's not that good a chat-client, so I'd prefer IRC. I'd suggest #LifeIn19x19 on Quakenet, but we could use another network too.
Edit: there is #go on irc.freenode.net, so I withdraw my channel suggestion

Does anyone other than gamers and hackers still use IRC?

I prefer IRC for chat as well, but since many of us are likely to be on KGS in any case and there's already chat functionality there, I don't think it's worth risking some slight fragmentation of the community over. I do miss timestamps and logging, though.

you can program this website to link to irc!
then you dont have to open another program!!!
i remember 20 years ago I had a program that linked irc into the browser.
i believe the name was "ichat"
i guess they even lost their name and forgotten.
that was my first chat client.
after that i learned about MIRC.

There's already a semi-active Go channel on IRC: it's #go on irc.freenode.net and it's usually got about 10 people in it at any given moment. There's about as much discussion on it as on the GD room on KGS, which is to say not a whole lot, but it's not silent either.

It's heavily used by developers; (unless that's what you meant by "hackers") FreeNode is practically a core part of communication for loose open-source development teams like KDE's. Probably more technical support and programming wisdom is passed on through IRC these days than just about any other medium. It's definitely not "in" with the non-tech crowd much anymore though, especially now that you can get warez easier elsewhere.

Why does this thread compel me to bring up a KGS vent server? One minute I think the idea is "so bad it's good", the next minute I think the idea is "so bad it's actually just awful", but the idea has been teasing me for a couple of days now.

I thought you meant a server dedicated to people complaining about KGS. Thanks for the link and education. ;-)

Gamers and....hackers? Are we gamers in that low regard?

Using "hackers" in the pejorative and inaccurate term, as I infer you do, yes. Lots of us.

Geeks, mostly. Lots of people for whom the ability to communicate in real-time with multiple people in several geographical locations is useful. That's a lot of people.

Durham (UK) Go Club is, fundamentally, run over IRC. I often find it professionally useful as well.

Rumours of our demise - like nntp's - are greatly exaggerated. HTH, HAND.

When you play go, you are a gamer.
