Why are there no translations of "Yose At A Glance"?

http://senseis.xmp.net/?YoseAtAGlance

I wonder if the problems would be doable if I were able to find it in Japanese.

I have it. It's not a bad book, and you could probably get quite a bit out of it without knowing Japanese. I can't remember off the top of my head if the value of a move is also part of the problem.

Where/how did you get it? It looks to be primarily available on the amazon japan.

That is how I got it a year or two ago. I'll try to remember to check it out and do a quick review tonight.

I appreciate that very much. It seems there are many books in that series, which aren't reviewed sensei's library. I wonder if they are mostly problem books.

They are. I have tesuji and tsumego as well. I would say they are a bit on the easy side. That's what makes it 'at a glance'.

Thank you. I was able to use translate.google.com to translate the Japanese reviews(I interpret reviews like "I wish there were more text about the problem" as "Easy for me to just read the diagrams"). It seems the Yose, tsumego, and tesuji books are simply problem books, so they should be nice. I don't know about the Ko one, it seems like there may be more sophisticated explanations in the text.

Ok, I just grabbed the yose book. I have that, tesuji, fuseki, tsumego, and "more tsumego".

The yose book has three sections

1) sente yose, reverse yose
38 problems

2) aim for the opponent's weakness
93 problems

3) real game problems
38 problems

The problems are all fairly simple ones, so don't expect a lot of challenge from this book. 200 Endgame problems that you can get from slate and shell is a bit better I think.

There are other good endgame books in Japanese, but they require more knowledge. This one is ok with just knowing "right" and "wrong".

I wish there was big endgame problem book with 1000-2000 problems on Western market. Hmm, maybe I should write it...

I think there was another thread around where someone said something that would suit here perfectly:
"Hey BillSpight, how's that book going?" :p

Yeah, and if Cho Chikun endorsed it that would be awesome.

For christmas shopping I looked at the webpage of Hebsacker and next to dozens or hundreds of books on other parts of the game there were exactly three books on offer about the endgame. Either those three are bestsellers or you have to conclude there isn't much of a market for endgame books.

There are rather few endgame books (English or, AFAIK, Asian) because it is difficult to write them if they shall be much better than just tesuji / random problem collections and double sente - sente - reverse sente - gote distinction. For years, I thought that I could not write an endgame book, but in the meantime I could do preliminary reflections in and aside my previous books giving me confidence to put the endgame topic in the pipeline of books I wish to write some time. A TOC is already outlined in my head:) Presumably Bill's planned book would have a very different emphasis.

Well, I've never heard it officially, but I think he's been working on endgame theory for quite some time now. He posts on that every once in a while.

And I'm pretty sure I saw someone post that in another thread. Don't know which one.
