There have been numerous web pages announcing Hikaru No Go on Bluray, but I haven't seen it on L19.

Hikaru No Go on Bluray will be available in 5 separate box sets released in Japan from January 25 to May 24, 2013.

All 5 box sets composing the entire series are listed on Amazon.co.jp for about 87000 yen (about 800 euro or 1000 usd at today's conversion rate).

Here's a link to an announcement from September in English (including individual links to box sets on Amazon.co.jp).

Another announcement from Tokyo Information Net

sure, you can get the complete series in Japanese, but what about in English?

I don't see any indication of english dub or English subtitles in those announcements nor in what appears to be the official company information (google translated).

It's actually not too bad.

By comparison:

According to wikipedia, Kara no Kyoukai (a set of 8 movies) retailed in Japan for 52,500 yen (about US$620). The very limited US bluray release is currently ~$700-1500 on Amazon (albeit only through third parties with obscene markup).

Puella Magi Madoka Magica runs 7,350 yen (~$90) per volume... with only 2 episodes each (well, plus some bonus content). At six volumes, that'd be ~$540, for a 12 episode series...

Japanese consumers shell out a ton of cash for their anime....

If it gets licensed for release in the States Viz LLC will probably be the distributor.

Cool news, thanks for the share msgreg. Guess I'll have to start keeping an eye out for a release in the States (having FINALLY acquired a Blu-ray player).

A US re-release in any form would be great, especially if they release the WHOLE series.

Better yet if they actually dubbed the remaining 30 episodes & movie with the original cast. (Don't slap me, subtitle-fans.)

Learn something new everyday. Didn't even realize it was never completed the first time.

And dubbed? Dubbed?! If I don't watch it subtitled, how else will I pretend I can understand Japanese and the culture?!!

(Guess I get a slap from both sides for comments like that) :P

Greetings,
that's an astonishing price. I don't know the going rate for anime but boxed sets of the great TV dramas tend not to exceed 25 000 yen.
Not going to be in my Christmas stocking,
Cheers,
Buri

my OCD hates that I have a half a series sitting on my shelves.

Fair, I also strongly prefer subs over dubs. But one set of subtitles still irks me. Whenever someone says "Shindo," the subtitle reads "Hikaru." What is the thinking there? That the audience will be confused because someone's family name was used? I doubt even the younger audience will be that dense. I'm fine making it more understandable to a Western crowd, but reading something clearly inconsistent with the voice is terribly annoying.

In any event, will the blu ray release really be of significantly higher quality? I assume the aspect ratio is unchanged.

Never quite understood that either.

With how old it is, I assume not higher VIDEO quality, but it should be better audio quality (usually how that works with older stuff that isn't actually in a high (enough) def format to begin with).

I believe iTunes has the whole thing dubbed and available for purchase. Blu-ray for animation seems pointless. There's hardly any detail worth a higher resolution.

I prefer the dubbed, because I don't understand Japanese, and I don't want to have to read. I'd prefer to watch and listen. If I wanted to read, I'd buy the manga (which I did, by the way).

Besides there's much more information conveyed in the translated audio than in the often abbreviated subtitles.

They did the same thing in the Go Seigen movie, The Go Master

They would call his name, in Japanese "Seigen" but the English subtitles would use his Chinese name, "Wu" instead. For what little Japanese I do understand, it was highly confusing and annoying.
