Online playing schedule: When I can
Hi all!

I`ve just tried out Nova.gs It`s already looking very good and has some very interesting features. Since it appears to me moving forward apace, don`t you agree it deserves its own forum here?

If you haven`t tried it, I recommend it. It has a lot of the plus points of Kaya, but arguably better interface and layout. It could be the serious alternative to KGS that we`ve been hoping for for a long time.

It has also a nice feature: tournaments.

Besides it already has a lot of more games than kaya.gs (though almost all of the games are turn based, even though nova.gs also supports realtime games).

I think it will deserve its own forum once there are enough related postings, but ah well, wbaduk also has only a few postings, so maybe a nova.gs forum is probably suitable as well.

I am just afraid of the inflationary amount of subforums, but then, I rarely uses these as I only use the "view unread posts" feature..

The rengo malkovich subforum hasn't been used in almost two years, but it's still here, so I guess the admins don't share your fear. ;)

If nova.gs would be talked about and is used, I say give it its own forum.

Totally agree. Nova.gs has a lot of potential. It has all the important features already and it looks really nice.

Agree. Nova.gs is now a lot more active than Kaya.gs which also has its own subforum.

Perhaps we can start a new sub-forum for each tournament, joseki, and book?

Or we could combine all the servers into one "Go Servers" forum, and start moving in a more rational direction.

Well, that's not a really fair comparison.

I agree with you, though. It would be nice to simply make a new "Go Servers" forum and restrict bug/error reporting. If a server doesn't have its own mechanism for bug reports, then it's probably not worth being mentioned.

All games on Nova are real-time, meaning that although the time setting might be correspondence, if both players are online the board is updated in real-time with no browser refresh required enabling the players to play out parts of the game quicker. This is one of the distinguishing features of Nova's correspondence games.

In addition, Nova uses a seek graph similar to those found on chess servers which makes finding games in your preferred time range easier.

I could go on and on listing features that are either not present in other servers or poorly implemented. Nova Rocks!

Actually, we are concerned about such things. But we are still feeling our way here.

L19 is young. It was done a hurry when GD was dying. Back in April of 2011 we were rushing to make it presentable.
A lot of things were done ad hoc. Lots of decisions were made without adequate time to consider the long term consequences.

It was like trying to set up a refugee camp in a third world country after a famine. If we could get food and shelter for everyone, we were happy to be able to do just that much. Latrines came next. Sorry, but we did not reserve space for tennis courts and jacuzzis.

Once we do have time to reflect on what we are doing, determining the optimal structure of a forum is still not easy. It is always a trade-off between a simple, easy to understand forum, and a forum that covers everything. Even if the go world were a static entity, structuring a forum to reflect it is a non-linear task with no clear rules for optimization.
On top of that, the go world is changing constantly, so we are always trying to hit a moving target.

So my approach has been to add forums as necessary, hoping to eventually see the overall shape of the go world reflected therein. That will be followed by some restructuring to make it easier to navigate. When that will be done, I cannot say, but it is at least months, maybe years in the future.

In summary, yes, we are concerned about it, but we are not in any hurry to do anything major about it.
