Preliminaries have started.

Bracket: http://igokisen.web.fc2.com/wr/sc.html
Kifus: http://www.go4go.net/go/games/tournament/1

Schedule and seeded players: (thanks to trout)

8/6/14: Preliminary finals

8/25: Opening ceremony
8/26-8/28: Round of 32
10/14,10/16: Round of 16 and 8
Semi Final: 11/3,11/5 and 11/6
Final: 12/9-12/11

Seeded players:
Korea: Lee Sedol (runner-up), Kim Jiseok, Park Junghwan, Cho Hanseung
China: Tang Weixing (winner), Shi Yue, Wu Guangya, Chen Yaoye, Tuo Jiaxi
Japan: Takao Shingji, Murakawa Daisuke
Wild Card: Lee Changho

The last Samsung Cup was won by Tang Weixing when he beat Lee Sedol 2-0.

Once again I'll be cheering for Japanese/Western/female/amateur players (basically all underdogs), especially Ichiriki Ryo, kid looks very promising.

Worth noting (at least, I was mildly surprised and don't know many more female pro names anyway) Xie Yimin is in the main group, not in the female group.

Good catch. Assuming the red is consistent, she is the only one doing that.

Where do you see those Westerners? Are they seeded to the main tournament since I don't see them in the preliminary list.

Scroll down and you'll see the World section. It's part of the preliminaries, and the winner of that section goes into the main tournament.

Yeah, apparently the Nihon Ki-in made a mistake in the registration process and entered her in the main group by accident.

A pity, I assume she may have done really well in the female section

The Nihon Kiin homepage is reporting that Ichiriki Ryo is the only Japanese player surviving in the open section, winning his third game today. Meanwhile all three Japanese in the senior section continue motoring along: Oya Koichi, Komatsu Hideki, and Goto Shungo.

The bigger news IMHO is in the ladies section where Fujisawa Rina beat Park Jieun(!) 9p. She faces Kim Hyeoimin, another Korean former titleholder, tomorrow. Compatriot Mannami Nao also won her third game, beating Kim Miri.

17-year-old Ichiriki Ryo might be the hero Japan needs. His record is 10-2 (international) and 37-10 (domestic). He's like the only Japanese actually winning anything in international tournaments. His opponents aren't the best pros, but that's still very impressive.

Then there is 15-year-old Fujisawa Rina, the granddaughter of Fujisawa Shuko, who's also showing quite a performance. Go Japan!.

16 year old Kyo Kagen was the runner up in Globis and went undefeated for the Japanese team in Chinese City league. It's almost as impressive as Ichiriki. Ida Atsushi had a rough time in Honinbo against Iyama but his run in the Honinbo league was excellent. There are quite a few young Japanese players playing well.

World bracket...

Eric Lui vs Zhaonian Chen
Xiang Zhang vs Jan Hora

The winners of each game play each other for the remaining spot.

What exactly is the world bracket? Is this just a side event, or do they have some right to qualify for the main tournament next year?

Truly awesome. Is there somewhere we can view or download these games?

There are links to a handful here.

http://igokisen.web.fc2.com/wr/sc.html

Fujisawa Rina's latest is available.

Thanks! Link for Fujisawa's latest game opened right to default sgf viewer (nice) but, in the game info instead of Park Jieun it says her opponent is Rui Naiwei - that can't be right can it? Rui is in a whole different bracket. Unless. Omg, has she already dispatched Naiwei as well!? :o
