That made me chuckle by it truthfulness.

It would seem that the best move is to simply follow the joseki rather than deal with the consequences of trying to be fancy.
The whole point of these exercises is to help understand the meanings
behind each joseki move, instead of following them blindly by memorization.
So we play out the consequences if either side deviates from the joseki.

This all started from the original solid connect :b29: in the game.
To understand why this is not joseki, we study the joseki
This is what it means to study a joseki:
homework, then actual combat in real games,
then back to homework, rinse and repeat.

All this just for one move, :b29: , and we're far from finished —
there are still many more variations.

To seriously improve at Go is hard work.
(To play casually and just enjoy the game and friends is very different. )

Those two stones of mine on D4 look dead. I think if I abandon them now I won't lose as many points as trying to save them would.

The coordinate is D16. You can add a letter 'c' to enable coordinates:

[go]$$Bc :b1: tenuki
$$ ---------------------
$$ | . . . . . . . . . .
$$ | . . . 8 . . . . . .
$$ | . . O B . . . . . .
$$ | . . O B . . . . . ,
$$ | . O X 4 6 . . . . .
$$ | . O X 5 . 9 . . . .
$$ | . . 2 3 . . . . . .
$$ | . . . 7 . . . . . .
$$ | . . . . . . . . . .[/go]
In this case, the two :bc: stones are "cutting stones," —
they are important stones, with an important function —
and the loss of them would be bigger than the apparent 4 points.

This means :b7: was probably a mistake.
( This may be difficult for you, so just get an idea. )

Alright I'll ponder this all over for a while, especially the mistake I made at :b7:.
