Wasuji has occasionally appeared in this journal - he's always been a good fighter (My weakness), but here's what happens when he fights me in the middle of my "thickness". For example, W48 at P13, or W62 at K16 were moves I thought he should've played.

Pincer was bad in top left probably.

Trying to make a ponnuki also maybe bad because I spent 3 (And then 4) moves in the same corner? Sure, I wanted to see how effective it would be but...

Also, W150 at T11 wasn't a move I considered until after I decided not to capture! :)

Black t8 was bad because it made his atari, which he didn't do, sente.

L5 and E8 are how badly I give up points when I think I'm ahead. For L5 I was thinking there was some aji with the cut next to the left, but then I could just decide to give up two stones?

The pincer in TL was bad.

This game was really over at :b67:. Before that, what to say?

I think I would have played :b23: at Q5. You'd welcome :w24: at P4 and just push; but what else does White have?

:b35: seems to undermine the usefulness of the group above, so the Matthews rules say you either play C6 or tenuki.

:b45: should be OK. But with such a vague shape on the lower side I'd be worrying about White at M4 at an awkward moment.

:w50: lacks stab-in-the-back subtlety, and Black takes advantage. White makes a poor exchange on the right, and :b63: is strong, if obvious.

Currently I have over 800 Go seigen games compiled in 50 move kifu diagrams. I'm wondering if I should undertake the project to play them all out and save them as an sgf file to compile them all...

What software do you use to split the diagrams every 50 moves?

From now on all of my posts in this journal will be in a cute colour.

I signed up for 3 years of AGA membership because 1)Why not even if I don't play any rated games because the go activity in MY CITY OF 2+ MILLION PEOPLE IS ESSENTIALLY ZERO, and 2)it was only $10 per year for people under age 23 so that's almost nothing. I'll be 21 almost 22 by the time it expires.

Lost to a 1k by 6.5 points with a 7.5 komi. Even though iwin forces fights and overplays against me, he's still supposedly 4 stones stronger. (And fighting is my weakness so the difference is probably bigger.)

So I found the right answer to this problem but I wasn't confident even though I had been trying to read white to kill my answer for 5 minutes. I got it correct but there was one variation I didn't consider which turned out to not work anyways. I said that this was a bad thing and Kretzche said it was OK. I still insisted it was bad.

Kretzsche [2k]: for how long are you doing this trainign?
Khelly [5k]: ??
Khelly [5k]: Training?
Kretzsche [2k]: yea
Khelly [5k]: what training?
Kretzsche [2k]: tsumego practice
t3suji [2d]: gokyo shumyo?
Khelly [5k]: This book or this problem?
t3suji [2d]: gokyo shumyo is fun if I remember correctly. By the time you get to the end, you can start right from the beginning :)
Kretzsche [2k]: the practice of solving tsumego in this throughout way in general
Khelly [5k]: Oh
Khelly [5k]: Uhh
Khelly [5k]: For over 3000+ problems
Khelly [5k]: Mostly repeats in cho's elementary about 4 times
Khelly [5k]: intermediate once through
Kretzsche [2k]: why still 5k?

RIGHT IN THE FEELS :blackeye:

I lost to a 5k because I defended a cut incorrectly and there was too much cutting aji. For most of the game I ~tried~ to pay attention to batt's fundamentals as given in his back to the basics series, but I think I just forgot about them halfway through the game. After I was cut I just looked for a place to resign unless he couldn't kill.

:b11: Not a move I would consider normally, but it looks fairly big to me.

:b13: Symmetrical double wing, I should invade now yes?

:b25: Not sure what to play here; I think white can just cut and fight. Maybe 23 was wrong

:b47: much like b11, I don't think I'd play it normally, but it seems good.

:b67: should be tiger's mouth no? Or was direct connection better? I dunno, I wanted to elicit a response to semi defend in sente.

:b69: Well I'm surrounded now, I should jump out, no? UGHHH

:b89: Maybe I should've read that attachment for longer than, "Oh, I have to push out now and white will split me." and actually see if white can wiggle his way out while I try to connect myself.

:b95: I was scared of those weird attachments I know exist in that high enclosure but I don't know what their variations are

:b103: Oops. No, I'm not going to get myself cut to cut these two stones off. Abandon plan.

It's at times like this I wonder how do people actually improve since it's some metaphysical concept.

Actually I need to not panic and just give up because reading THAT should be easily feasible.

Less passively defending
Less giving up
More actual reading

By going back to basics. Like reading and counting liberties.

The idea for :b27: is something I didn't consider because I just wanted to make vague shape and live and be satisfied with my reduction. I was pretty satisfied with this reduction because I've played far too many moyo games to know that what white is doing is inherently bad - it's over concentrated.
:b57: I considered the double hane but I didn't want to give white a ponnuki in my corner in exhcange for the 3 stones.

Your :b101: is great.

:b103: I changed my mind afterward so I regretted the decision.

##Pro Games##

//[1982-10-27] 7th Japanese Meijin, title match #5
Cho Chikun 9p (Black) vs. Otake Hideo 9p (White) B+R (5.5 komi)

##Batt's Fundamentals##
Cut points are important. Take a large point because don't want him to attack me.

Don't want to ignore hits to my stone.

Keep my group connected so respond.

No cut points so respond.

Doesn't affect my group so play a large move.

It IS the surrounding game.

Worried about cut points so not making another.

When split push towards influence.

Taken care of cut so he can turn,

Take care of another.

Keep connection is important.

Don't want to get attacked so defend the one stone.

He's attacking so rob his base and defend corner.

Doesn't hurt us so can go elsewhere.

Want to remain connected so respond x2

Might need shape so will give more shape

Being cut off on the left so going to protect group

Strong everywhere + Shape everywhere = Can attack

No disconnected so push out and threatento kill the two stones.

Crosscut - which is weak

No hane at head of 2/3 so extend again

Correct move is cap and prevent from connecting
attaching to my stone so pull back

If I cut him am I in trouble?

Bad things could happen if I let my stones get disconnected

Push up because I don't want him connecting up to the middle

Can't go anywhere because cut point

Keep him from connecting here

He's connectng underneath doesn't harm us so I guess I can reduce him from up here

Don't want to be atari'd so extend

I finally beat Xombar for the first time. And he's 3k! I am still amazed, as Path shows, how one slow move and turn a game from in your favour to even or from even to a losing game. It can really change the direction of where the game heads.

18:56] Khelly: Man what does it mean to be slow with territory but not with defending groups
[18:57] Khelly: Maybe that's better than the reverse
[18:57] Path: it means your moves are perfect when it comes to helping your groups secure eyespace
[18:57] Path: but your moves are often too scared when you defend points
[18:57] Path: like you can leave invasion points in your own moyos
[18:57] Path: but you cant leave them in your eyespace
