Through Korean preliminary, the following players are selected.

Choi Cheolhan, Min Sangyeon, Baek Chanhee(1p defeated ranking #2 Kim Jieseok in group final.)

Also Park Junghwan is seeded as Korean ranking #1.
Wild card will be selected soon. (Probably Kim Jieseok.)

How about other countries ?

Main match
1st round: 10/20/2015~10/23/2015
2nd round: 11/27/2015~12/1/2015
3rd round: 3/1/2016~3/5/2016

Four of the five players for China have been determined:

Wild cards: Gu Li (ranking #4, recent Chunlan Cup champion), Ke Jie (ranking #2, recent Bailing Cup champion), Lian Xiao (ranking #7, terminator of the last tournament)

From the double-elimination preliminary: Wu Guangya (ranking #19)

Seven players still have chance to be selected from the preliminary.

It makes sense to me that Lee Sedol would be selected as wild card, even if he's below Kim Jiseok. Players with a history like him or Lee Changho (some years ago) are worth including as long as they are near the top, even if there's a player who's a little bit stronger at the moment. It's even easier when there's so little space between the two, like with Lee and Kim.

It seems to me that Japan has better chance of winning this cup after a long time.

Japan actually chooses the same players as last year, and I agree that this is their best line-up for the moment. Besides Iyama, the only one who could really compete against top Chinese and Korean pros, Kono Rin has fairly good international results (compared to Yamashita or Takao), and the 3 others are surely the best representatives of the next generation :blackeye: .

Korean and Chinese teams are still stronger, but it would be an interesting tournament for all the 3 countries, I hope.

For Korea, glad to see Lee Sedol back

The goratings database has only 5 games from Baek Chanhee, so the rating will not be very stable. It currently gives Ichiriki Ryo 70% odds to win.

By goratings elo, Ichikiri Ryo had a 39% chance to beat Fan Yunruo. Not a huge upset, but he wasn't favored.

He has 51% against Min Sangyoun; they are 9 elo apart. If he does win 3 in a row it will be the best result by a Japanese pro in the Nongshim cup since Yoda Norimoto won 3 games way back in 2006 (I think).

And with that, they've matched last year's win count without yet losing a single player.

I like Ichiriki's style, lots of intricate close fighting and interesting shapes.
