Call me mimosa, but I must admit, I feel hurt when someone beats me and then doesn't thank me for the game. (Yes, I am referring to online games.) To me, someone who knows how to do it and doesn't is just a jerk. (Filter would probably prevent me from saying a-hole, so I'll just leave it at that). What is the matter with these people?

You are mimosa.
And you're welcome. ;)

I don't feel hurt, but I do think it is bad manners. In the case of people who have their language set to something like Japanese I can excuse it as they may not speak English at all. Also, on some servers it is understandable because they are not based in the west.

But for the vast majority of online games played by people here in L19 I think there is no excuse for it. What really annoys me is when I go to the trouble at the end of the game to type out in full "thank you for the game" and by the time I hit the enter guy the opponent has typed "tx" and gone. As I don't really want to play such people again I usually just but them on my censor list so that I am warned about them in the future.

I thank everyone I beat. Even if they've already left without thanking me.

For me, the more common outcome is for someone to leave without thanking me after they have lost - they are angry. Then the next day they will beat me, and suddenly they have time to thank me. In such cases, they are not thanking me for the game, but thanking me for boosting their mood.

I guess my expectations have dropped so low that I'm practically thrilled when someone takes the time to write out a whole word, and if they only manage to squeeze out an abbreviation, that still suffices to placate me and my tender sensibilities.

Personally, I don't care if my opponent says "hi" or "gg" or "tx".

In Go, people who speak different languages, are from different cultures, or are different ages are united by the moves that they play. That composes the game. Anything else can be nice, but is not needed.

It's nice to be friendly and to chat to people, but it's not part of the game itself, IMO. That's why people from different cultures, speaking different languages, and from different backgrounds, can be connected.

Mimosa is also called "sensitive plant".

Mimosa, while being a beautiful tree, is also considered a weed tree in many places because it throws out so many seedlings it is hard to get rid of. I planted one on my property because I like them when full grown, but it planted it a good 250 feet from the house.

Mimosa pudica, the coy mimosa. In Kerala, South India, the land of my childhood, this shrub (word? there it was a low-growing plant, it’s a big family, not all are trees) were very common and often covered several square metres of ground … we kids used to write on them with sticks, it was awesome to watch how quickly they “folded their hands” when being touched, and how after a few minutes they opened them again, very slowly.

Thanks for the flashback :-)

I have a habit of always saying "hi and hf!" at the start of a match and "ty gg" at the end. Picked it up playing Starcraft where it's considered bad-mannered if a player doesn't at least say "gg" after a match.

I'm glad I do this for three reasons:

1. It's polite and I don't like being rude (even after a particularly rough game).
2. It's a consistent routine that helps me get into the proper mindset for the match and let go at the end of the match.
3. It helps to keep me in a positive mindset by being outwardly positive.

These reasons may be a bit self-centered, but that's why it doesn't bother me if someone else doesn't say a word. I do it mainly for my own benefit. If my opponent is so grumpy after a loss that they can't even muster two letters, that's their problem.

Hopefully, this encourages those of you with good manners to keep it up. :)

It could be because the person isn't familiar with the KGS interface and is used to servers like Tygem where you get a bunch of pre-written messages available via buttons...

...or it could be that guy I opened the door for the other day who didn't even give me the courtesy of a glance, let alone say thanks. Forget that guy.

You are mimosa.

what does that mean?

In this context? No clue.
But he asked to be called that, do I did.

PS>
"A Mimosa is a cocktail composed of equal parts champagne and chilled citrus fruit juice, usually orange juice unless otherwise specified."
I got that off of the internet, so it must be true. But still no clue what it means in this context.

Hope this helps.

AFAIK it’s usually used in a derogatory manner, like calling somebody a “sissy” or something, meaning that the person is (alleged to be) overly sensitive.

Oh, really? Is that British?

PS>
I really like the drink (very refreshing on a hot California day) and the plant looks nice too.
I think when I call somebody "mimosa" it must be a compliment then. ;)

Anyways, we seem to be hijacking the thread here with all this talk about mimosas. ;)

So to bring it back on track... In my personal opinion...

Having people engage in a full conversation - even during the game - is the most pleasant online-go experience for me.
Failing that, I like them to say full "Thank you" and stuff - just spell it out - before/after the game.
Failing that, things like "gg" and "tx" are ok too - who cares, I got a good game.
Failing that, just leaving without a word is not a problem - who knows maybe the other guy is grumpy or has toothache?

As for being a jerk? Nah... Who am I to judge people like that.

But if I were to judge... In my personal opinion...

I would think the jerks were those who would *require* me to behave a certain way, just to please them.
Those who would *require* me to introduce myself or they don't play.
Those who would *require* me say full "thank you" or they get offended and not play with me anymore.
And stuff like that.

I am grumpy and have toothache too every now and then, and then I rather people not put silly expectation on my spelling or manners.

Still - it takes all kinds.... Just my personal opinion, you understand. ;)
