Just yesterday I took all the avalanche variations off of my dailyjoseki queue, because I thought "when will I ever use any of this?" Then I had this game :) . My opponent got ahead in the middlegame because I mismanaged a weak group (esp. a good tesuji for black at 101), but I started a successful attack around 170 and my opponent messed up some endgame, so I was able to squeak out a win.

I was wondering about that. I know the usual joseki looks like this:

Click Here To Show Diagram Code
[go]$$W corner
$$ ------------------
$$ | . . . . . . . . .
$$ | . 3 X X 4 . . . .
$$ | . O O X O . . . .
$$ | . . X O . . . . .
$$ | . . X O . . . . .
$$ | . 6 X O . . . . .
$$ | . 5 1 X . . . . .
$$ | . . 2 . . . . . .
$$ | . . . . . . . . .[/go]

But after the sequence he played, I didn't see anything I could do other than let it revert:

[go]$$W corner
$$ ------------------
$$ | . . . . . . . . .
$$ | . 5 X X 6 . . . .
$$ | . O O X O . . . .
$$ | . . X O . . . . .
$$ | . . X O . . . . .
$$ | . 4 X O . . . . .
$$ | . 3 1 X . . . . .
$$ | . . 2 . . . . . .
$$ | . . . . . . . . .[/go]

Any ideas?

In your diagram:

[go]$$W corner
$$ ------------------
$$ | . . . . . . . . .
$$ | . 5 X X 6 . . . .
$$ | . O O X O . . . .
$$ | . . X O . . . . .
$$ | . . X O . . . . .
$$ | . 4 X O . . . . .
$$ | . 3 1 X . . . . .
$$ | . . 2 . . . . . .
$$ | . . . . . . . . .[/go]

the exchange of 5 for 6 prevents black capturing white's corner very easily.

Since white has neglected to do this, presumably he wants you to eat the corner. I think it is reasonable to oblige.

[go]$$W corner
$$ ------------------
$$ | . 6 . . . . . . .
$$ | . 5 X X . . . . .
$$ | . O O X O . . . .
$$ | . 4 X O . . . . .
$$ | . . X O . . . . .
$$ | . . X O . . . . .
$$ | . 3 1 X . . . . .
$$ | . . 2 . . . . . .
$$ | . . . . . . . . .[/go]

This leaves white with an annoying problem of attacking black's cutting stone.
