Please take no offense. This, my first go problem, was created with great respect (if not skill).

Black to play, is Richard Bozulich alive or dead?:

It is not a true triple ko. A triple ko has three kos all of which affect the same thing ( usually the life of death of a group). In this instance, it is a double ko on the right and a separate single ko on the left. If black tries to play it like a triple ko, white will fill at E4 and kill the 'R', then come back and kill the 'B' at his leisure.

Actually, you have the cart before the horse. People who live longer are more likely to be rumored dead.

Kirk, please reread what I wrote above.

I actually put a lot of time into this whole thing, verifying things and otherwise. And not all newspapers publish obituaries online, by the way.

Still no excuse. Did you contact other go associations who might have more knowledge of Richard personally? Did you send an e-mail to Kiseido?

I'm relieved to now be fairly sure that Mr Bozulich is alive after all.

For what it's worth, yes I did contact go associations. I also contacted Kiseido, several times in fact. I did this reluctantly at first, because I was worried I'd be upsetting his grieving family by doing so.

Richard chose not to respond to me or others for a very long time. In fact, he still hasn't responded to any of my inquiries. Meanwhile his friends genuinely believed he was dead.

I'm sorry for misinforming you and others. I've made some mistakes on this matter and I'll definitely learn from them. I won't editorialise further, Kirk, you're smart enough to draw your own conclusions.

Next time we should wait to publish until the deceased has confirmed the fact himself. Lets hope he will remain young forever.

In the mystery arsewipe's defense, Boz was in the hospital for complications from his treatment. Miscommunications happen and sometimes turn into false reports.

I was once at a wedding where the minister announced that my date (a bridesmaid) was dead right before "you may kiss the bride." It was the biggest shock of my life, and not exactly fun for the bride and groom either. Luckily he, like the mystery arsewipe, had panicked and announced what the thought to be true; in fact, my date had only fainted from standing with her knees locked out for too long.

It's not about editorializing. It's about understand how journalism works.

I make my living as a journalist. There are some basic rules: check every fact twice. My writing is rarely about "news," but when it is, I check ever fact twice, and my editors check them as well. When blogging - and I have a blog that gets a fair number of page views - I _never_ blog about anything that hasn't been reported elsewhere, unless it's my opinion about something, or unless it's something that I have discovered and can demonstrate (I write about computers, so demonstration is possible).

I don't think bloggers - as opposed to real journalists who work for larger organizations - should ever "break news," unless they have at least two, or, even better, three sources that are indisputable. Your site is not a news site, and you got some info that you rightly thought would be interesting to your readers, and you were right in thinking that. However, you didn't confirm it, and that's very embarrassing, not just to you, but to the person you mentioned.

It's not the end of the world. I'm really just trying to be helpful here. I am the one who posted the info here, because I trusted that you had done the legwork; I won't make that mistake again.

A colleague of mine was hit by a lorry when he has young and taken into hospital. When his family members came to see him the people at the hospital claimed he was dead. The deceased had a similar name to my colleague.

There was a story about an old (ex-)cricket player who was taken into hospital and, by coincidence, his obituary was delivered to a newspaper on the same day. Newspapers normally keep a library of such things ready. The next morning he called the newspaper to explain the confusion and he was asked precisely where he was calling from. I hope that Richard has many more years to laugh about this.

Best wishes.

While Kirk's claims for the efforts of journalists may make some of us raise an eyebrow, let's bear in mind that this is go we're talking about. It is a niche activity in the Western world, as well as a relatively close grouping of people who are active in one way or another.

There are few press releases about events, and someone like Bozulich is a quasi public figure, not quite like a CEO or celebrity. The ordinary way of things is that news of a death would circulate by word of mouth, without confirmation. We can't assume that a family member would think that the go community is the first group of people to inform, so we're probably left with a friend passing the information along.

That's the ordinary way of things in a group like this, and it's going to be hard to apply any other norm.

Whether David's decision to publish is responsible seems to depend on issues concerning the tenor of the email, who it represented itself as being from, and so on. For obvious reasons of not embarrassing someone who was probably acting in good faith, he may not want to reveal all of that. I suspect it wasn't a perfect decision, but keep a little perspective.

Super good news.

From the AGA website-- http://www.usgo.org/
Quote:
Richard Bozulich Not Dead After All

November 9, 2011

Rumors of Ishi Press founder Richard Bozulich’s death, as Mark Twain once said, have turned out to be greatly exaggerated. Bozulich was indeed hospitalized, sources tell the E-Journal, “but he is at home and OK now.” In an email to Teddy Terpstra, Bozulich reported that “Although I was in the hospital for some surgery and experienced a minor glitch, I did survive. My ‘biographer’ did not wait around for the final prognosis and jumped to the conclusion that I had expired.” A clearly amused Bozulich signed off “Best regards from beyond the crypt,” with assurances that “I hope to be around for another 15 years or so.”

But your happy revision is a haiku fail.

eastern mist lifted
enthralling landscape revealed
our Moses with us

The first haiku was better - but it was like a great tesuji in a lost game, I prefer this more mediocre honte with the better result.

Black takes the ko in the R first. How does White prevent Black from filling in and making the R alive? Then there's the threat to capture the H6 stone. I believe Black wins the capturing race.

This all presumes that the outside stones are unconditionally alive, of course.
