So for those who are unaware of this forum game, refer to this thread. The rules this time are slightly different though. Instead of explicitly telling you that one game was played between DDKs and another between professionals, I will post 4 games instead of 5 and not say anything about their level. They could all be played by SDKs, or it could be similar like last game where one game was played between DDKs, another between mid-dan players, etc.. I think this will not only be more challenging (obviously), it will be even more interesting to see the analysis.

Also, this time please give an explicit rank on the players rather than rank categories! If there are games played between amateurs, the two players in a game share the same rank. All amateur games (if there are any) were played on KGS, all time settings are non-blitz.

So what about the prize? Well simply, I will give a 3-month KGS+ subscription to whoever gets it closest (assuming you have a KGS account). Or, if you're a player who might be interested in me video-reviewing your games, I could do that as well. If you guess the rank of the players correctly for one game, you get 10 points, and for each rank you're off I take away 1 point to a minimum of 0. If you think a game was played between two pros, there's no need to try and guess their pro rank and just writing something like "Pro" is sufficient.

So for instance, if there was a game played between two pros and you guess that it was played between two KGS 6ds, then you get 7 points (setting KGS 9d as pro level, 9 - 6 = 3). The maximum number of points you can get is 40.

If the person who gets the highest score gets a perfect score, I will make it a 1-year KGS+ subscription instead of 3-months :) (or as I mentioned earlier, video-reviews...or teaching games if you're a kyu player? Blah I'm beginning to sound egotistical; let's just see if anyone gets 40 first).

And oh, please keep the format to something like this (and make sure it's hidden):

  1. 6d
  2. 5k
  3. Pro
  4. 10k

Credit to topazg for the alternative idea of this forum game! Games are below; I look forward to reading the analysis :). I'll post answers when the thread's winding down.

Game 1

Game 2

Game 3

Game 4

Up to you, but you might consider offering one or two video reviews as an alternative to KGS+. That way, if somone chose it you could save your wallet a bit.

Comments:

Game1

Players seem fairly competent, but quite passive. Probably a bit above my level, but definitely not dan caliber.

Game2

This is difficult. At first glance a notice a lot of plays that seem strange to me, so I think that this is either well below or well above my level. There are no rookie mistakes (there are a couple of moves that seem at first to be big mistakes, but their meaning dawn on me later), so I must think these players are stronger than myself. That said, there still are some moves that I must consider mistakes, so I can not assign a very high rank to these players.

Game3

Somehow these players seem very competent. They know their joseki and seem to play very solidly. Could even be pro.

Game4

Again a strange game. In the beginning they seem fairly competent, but the big blunder that leads to resignation tells me that they can not be very strong. If this was blitz, I would somehow understand it, but as it is not, these players must be weaker than me.

I find games 2 and 3 way above me, and games 1 and 4 more "bookish".

Hmmm I think the games are very very hard to guess...

Here are my thoughts

Game 1:
The players seem to have a good understanding of the basics, yet they are lacking some shape-feeling and some guidence in the opening. When I'm able to feel this they must atleast be weaker then me...on the other hand I think to play like them you have to be in SDK range. My guess for this game: 6kyu

Game 2:
Jesus... this game is going to bring me nightmares. The game itself is full of poor shapes etc. but to be able to read the lower left corner you have to be at least 1 dan or have very much thinking time or you're simply very lucky... Because of the bad shapes I think a lightinggame between two highdans is going on. My bet is on 3d

Game 3:
I dont understand anything about this game... maybe it is some kind of super bashkoreanprogame... or just some noobs playing around.
Dont know why, but: 8d

Game 4:
This kinda looks like a pro game with a super blunder ;)

meh, I don't know what to make of game 4, seemed sort of reasonable up until that big blunder at the end.

Anyway my guesses:

1. 5k
2. pro
3. 3d
4. 1k

edit: lmao Magicwand and Kirby both think game 2 is kyu level. Somebody is waaaaaay off.

Game 1: 7k. Wedging with C11 looks strange, some moves just looks funny, like N4, O16, F14. Unexpected end game sequence with T8 at move 62. Slow moves, odd moves, but a lot of decent moves as well, so im gonna put this guys 2 stones lower than myself.
Game 2: 4 dan. Classy opening, certainly not someone of my strength, so its hard to assess this game for me. Several kos, good fighting spirit. Based on my observing expirience it could be someone Captain-like so lets put it at 4 dan
Game 3: 1k. Wow! White is cutting black everywhere! Althoug shape is rather good game doesn't feel right. Lets put it at 1k on his bad day.
Game 4: Pro game. This game made the news recently, so I immidiatly recognized it.

meh that figures. What was really funny is that black noticed that 148 was atari, but not 150.

Very sneaky of Solomon to pick this one.

I kinda suspected this was a trick question, but IMHO in this case answering pro when the right answer is 10k looks a lot more foolish than answering 10k when the right answer is pro (who made a massive blunder)

11k: looks like a game my 10k friend would play
3d: high level but I don't think it's pro. seems like the kind of low dan experimentation you see on KGS
8k: Not sure.
Pro: Each player is refusing to follow the other. When I see this many tenukis I think pro.

I'm probably way off. I got none right for the last game. The reason I thought game 2 was bad was because of C3 and C4, but I could be wrong.

I plugged everyone's answer into excel.
The average isn't very meaningful, but the mode gives:

1. 7k
2. pro
3. 1k
4. pro

The median gives:

1. 7k
2. 3d
3. 1k
4. 1k
