I just had a look at dwyrin's lost game against a 1 kyu ... san-ren-sei fuseki

While I would be interested in where he went wrong and lost the game, I have a very specific question about his move 26, where he entered the corner On 3-3.

I always wondered if this is a big enough move if played early, given that it is gote. Any insights?

Pardon me for adding the "sgf" tags inside the quote that you seem to have forgotten (yes ol' EZ has been out drinking, he isn't usually so abrupt ). That out of the way, of course 26 is a lousy play. How should we judge such things? Let's consider alternatives. What if White played K16 instead of R3, Black played S4, and White played C14? How would you think the situation would compare to the game? Black has an extra 18 points or so in the lower right corner and White has XX more points on the upper side. XX is roughly how many do you think? This is the essence of evaluation. When considering any move, we have to ask, "Compared to what?" My "what" is K16; what's yours and how do you evaluate the resulting position?
