Re: Myths in Go #1 "Joseki"

In fact, think about why so many pros seem to say "i don't really know joseki"
This is just another myth. Pros do know joseki. They are just being coy. For people who don't know joseki, they certainly love writing joseki books to make money. They certainly use the word when doing commentary. What ...

Re: Failure of free club culture

I think the consensus is that no matter what method is used, if a jerk is teaching, then the beginner will suffer?

I am sure that some methods are better than others for most people, but none of that matters if the company is unpleasant. Toward that end, perhaps it is more important to recruit ...

The thrill of beating a much younger player at the top of his game has got be great. It's certainly very inspiring for those of us in the over-30 crowd.

Congrats.

Re: What is a Beginner?

A beginner is someone who has not been playing very long. I am being facetious. You meant what should be considered "beginner level". That question can be answered by reading books aimed at beginners. They usually explain

Fuseki is my favourite part of the game
I agree with the sentiment that hobbies should be fun. That said, many of the things people say about themselves just are not true. For example, many people say they like fuseki (not you...other people I've met) but barely spend any of their game time on it ...

Re: Shina Kaya vs Agathis (Color, Sound & Durability)

Is anyone else bothered by the 3d renders of the go boards as the main image reference material on the GGG website? That's roughly equivalent to amazon putting drawings of book covers in the preview window instead of the actual cover.
One of us must have eye problems because I don't see any 3d ...

Re: Is the OGS Clock Suitable for Real-Time Games?

I find the chaotically concatenated string of characters to be too small, low-contrast, inconsistent and difficult to read.
I actually have no problem with it. As you say, it could be better, but you can also get used to it.

I do agree that it could actually be much better. That said, you shouldn ...

Re: Shina Kaya vs Agathis (Color, Sound & Durability)

I bought the thicker one-piece shin-kaya board (m) from GGG and I am quite satisfied with it.

To me, it is the perfect board for everyday use. It has not shown the slightest sign of warping in my extremely dry home. It looks pleasing enough when I play on it and it does not require much care. I ...

Re: It's never owa till it's owa

I very much doubt that after 15 moves in a Meijin title match either side has made an error that an amateur can detect.
But the game was played nearly 30 years ago. An amateur today would have access to 30 years worth of professional research that wasn't available back then. You would have a ...

Re: Have you ever played chess with a woman?

The macho/peacocking bs in go/chess is a turnoff for all new players, not just women. That sort of behavior is directed at all weaker players, not just women. I have certainly seen some new male players become discouraged because of excessive chest-thumping and snideness on the part of their peer ...
