Re: Comparison of go rank with chess rating

I've played chess for about 20 years but never seriously studied the game at all (only book I ever read the whole way through was "Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess," which btw is a very good book), and I am 1453 USCF. I think my trajectory in chess is similar to all the people at club who seem to just ...

Re: Obscuring Precalculated Plays

I think the idea of pros trying to hide secret variations from amateurs is just ridiculous. Why would they do that?

I didn't say amateurs, I said lower ranked dan's.

Um, your post says quite clearly "amateurs and lower ranked dans".

Anyway, if you study variations for yourself, unless you ...

Re: Overcoming mood

Embrace your mood - don't play go when you don't want to play go, but play and study a ton when you're motivated to.

IMO, of course.

Re: General things to take a 1D to 6D?

Usually you dont have to read to find endgame tesuji, they are just obvious?

Correct me if im wrong or do you have an example?

That endgame problem required a lot of reading.

I think this is a bad example, as it does not demonstrate ...

Re: Life and death shapes to know

Anyone have specific common shapes from joseki I should know at 1D level?

Like Ive hear of L, L+1, L+2, J, etc but dont really know much about them.

From my brief knowledge L= dead L+1= unsettled L+2= alive ?

Any other shapes with names that are common?

Like Bill posted, knowing all the shapes ...

Re: Thinking + Improvement

Many of Laszlo Polgar's training techniques implicitly rely on people being able to learn subconsciously, and I'd say his daughters turned out pretty good at chess.

Maybe you should have some children and train them to be go prodigies to prove your theories.

Re: How much time do you spend analyzing/replaying a pro gam

I haven't studied pro games in a while, but when I was studying them, I spent about 3 hours per game. I was about 2d when I spent the most time studying pro games.

Although many of the moves were well beyond my comprehension (either because I couldn't even get close to reading out whatever ...

Re: When is the right time to resign or continue a game?

If you've ever played on tygem, you should know that you should never resign until your opponent can't self-atari any of their groups anymore.

Lessons in the Fundamentals of Go is infinitely more entertaining, so I would recommend that one to an 8k.

Re: Memorizing Tsumego via SRS

At the end of each branch that you have read out, you need positional judgment for the decision whether the move that you have read out is good or not. So you cannot separate the reading process from the positional judgment.
That isn't what Laman said.

Laman: my thought experiment doesn't only ...

Re: Memorizing Tsumego via SRS

Sure, none of these are particularly difficult to read out when they're right in front of you, but what if one of these is the result of 6-7 moves worth of reading? Even if you can read it out in theory, saving 15 minutes of time on your clock is going to help quite a lot.

This example proves my ...

Re: Memorizing Tsumego via SRS

Alright, while I was doing some life and death problems I came across some examples which I think will help demonstrate the point I was trying to make regarding recognizing common shapes.

Here are a few go problems that can be solved more or less immediately by someone who has a decent knowledge of ...

Also, let me know when one of the students of your teaching methods become a professional so L19 can award you with a "Greatest Go Teacher ...
