I find that the Chinese have many very high quality series of videos (history, live online self reviews, weekly top 5 moments, pro game commentaries, lectures for different levels on joseki/fuseki/endgame/shape/etc) by pros available to the public (weiqitv), particularly over the past 2 years or so, but its difficult to follow if you don't understand Chinese. I've tried to translate a 9d commentary of a game in the Chinese League A (where the "toughest" games are at) I've added a more detailed explanation of some things they skimmed over, but have tried to avoid adding any of my own thoughts. Enjoy.

I don't mind. I don't know much about copyright issues, could there be a problem? I just transcribed a much more in depth self review by a pro, posting in Iyama ... (pro section) EDIT: I may as well add it to this thread too

Who was the commentator? I'm surprised L11/12 didn't get a comment as they were the weirdest moves in the game to me, the later particularly. Peeping twice where you can cut, was the idea really to attack the shape and try to kill cos that looks like pie-in-the-sky dreaming, as seen with the resign soon after. Or was it just surrounding the centre points? If he cuts white would just atari out and live and destroy the centre? |

It was Liu XiaoGuang 9p. Actually, he said if cut then W has too many ko threats, and that the 2nd peep was pointless, should just live in the corner (an implication of hopeless anyway?). I didn't get everything down, and I skipped that last bit as I didn't think it was too interesting (time for B to resign anyway) and yes, I think he was trying to kill |

Some big news as of today that weiqitv running free for 3 years is going to start charging. They've completely redeveloped their website, and said that they will start charging next month if I understood correctly. Meng Tailing explained that its not to make money but to both sustain and build on their services. Also, he said that even he was a bit negative/passive (not sure about the word) sometimes and this would make them more responsible in the things they say. He said how the three creators (Liu Xing, him, and Zhao ShouXun) are merely go players, not skilful at making money, they have pressure not just on their energy, but on their balance books. |

My chinese isn't good enough to be sure. My guess is that the old videos remain free, they have a free zone, and the new ones next month probably won't be. They have produced some more pro commentaries yesterday on the Samsung cup, a game which got Meng quite excited for quite a bit. He talks a lot, and it shows in this commentary. You hear a lot about the go world. Liao Xingwen is actually on a Guardian article, coming to London in 2000 (google his name). Here is my translation

the next one along. In this one they talk a lot about how the Chinese City league works NB there's a moment where in my opinion they misread a centre fight by 1 liberty. I show a few variations

I'm happy to hear your appreciation ![]() I think those commentaries are good, but they are filled with lots of chatter, and are not so intense on the go. So I decided to translate the first of a video series that I found most useful from 5k to 1k. In particular, this first video proved to be very useful. This is a translation Ge's online school quality lectures. This one covers a very common set of side invasion joseki that you don't easily learn about elsewhere.

In the variation where is asks which ladders and then shows which 2 ladders you should check it says you need to have at least one which is false isn't it? You need to have both ladders to play it otherwise black plays the opposite side and now you are stuck with a fail ladder. |

yes W normally needs both ladders or else B chooses to protect the other side as you say |

The "Memories of killing dragons in the middle game fighting" series isn't weiqitv I think but older. This is a series of 60 videos on killing big groups. It's details are for dan players, but I think kyu players can still appreciate most of the fuzzy ideas.

weiqitv seem to be offering 365 RMB/year annual subscription or 99 RMB for 90 days.

It seems that we can still watch these for free, though I can no longer find the schedule page. Does subscription do anything for us (who live overseas)? Or is it only to attend live events and stuff? |
