Go expenditures and significant others

Post by deja »

Does your significant other either complain about or limit your Go expenditures? In my household, my partner controls the finances from top to bottom. If she didn't, we'd be broke. I'm the stereotypical impulse buyer - a genetic defect from my mother. If presented with a bargain or what I believe to be a bargain, I buy first and ask questions later. The amount of money wasted because of this...

My wife does keep a watch on my Go spending and if it becomes excessive, I hear about it in no uncertain terms. I currently have my eye on a very nice Hyuga Kaya board but there's no way my wife would allow me to buy it, and she's absolutely right. It's not necessary, what I have is more than adequate, and we can't afford it.

Nevertheless, I find myself engaged in justifying "small purchases" (mostly Go books) in a sort of sorites paradox fashion - if $20.00 isn't a big deal, then certainly $25.00 wouldn't matter much either, and if $25.00 doesn't matter all that much, then....

So what does your significant other think about your Go expenditures?

It's pretty much the reverse for me, and my Go expenditures are in the form of a B'day/Xmas present list for people to buy stuff for me. I'm far too tight with money to spend it on myself most of the time :D

My wife laments the time spent, not the money.

My wife and I each have our own special needs. Hers are art books and art supplies, mine are Go books, and woodworking books and supplies. (Don't really need anymore Go equipment, so that's not a problem.) So, we have a sort of "mutual tolerance" thing going on.

When I'm spending 20 bucks on go books, I'm not spending 50 bucks on videogames. So far, so good...

Me too.

I haven't bought new go equipment or books in about 15 years. My only expenditures have been going to congress, and I've only done that three times since we were married 10 years ago.

I got a raised eyebrow on the 2,5 inch Kaya board, cherrywood bowls and shell and slate stones, but mostly it is the time spent for me too.

You are my wife. I have to convince her that it's ok to buy stuff for herself, which of course increases my guilt for buying stupid crap, which I don't do much anymore. The older I get the tighter I get, much to the delight of my wife.

My wife encourages me to buy things related to go, but I am sometimes a bit stingy with money. I think she prefers when I am studying go to when I am posting on the forums, though :)

Wow! Me too. And she has put up with me the whole time.

By the way, the time issue is probably equally, if not more, bothersome to my significant other.
