Could This Be My Solution To Mobile KGS?
Does this run the KGS client?
I can tether it to my iPhone wifi hot spot.

I would only really be buying it to use with KGS. I realize that is crazy, but what the heck.

Yes that would run KGS and the price isn't bad. Software is an older generation though.

You might be better off buying a 7 inch android tablet for around the same price. I dislike KGS on my phone, but love it on my tablet. I would suggest the nook tablet 16gb (rooted, it is very easy if you are technically savvy) or the samsung 8 gb galaxy tablet. They both run about $250 and will give you a much better KGS experience than the smaller phone sized device.
Well worth spending the extra 50 dollars imo. Plus you get a very nice e-reader type device too. I devour books on my 7 inch tablet. Not bad for web surfing too.

Re: Could This Be My Solution To Mobile KGS?
Any thoughts on the Lenovo Ideapad A1? I'm not terribly familiar with Android devices, but Lenovo has made some quality products lately, and it's only $190 on Amazon. It's also a 7" tablet and gets solid reviews. But it only has a single-core processor, so I guess it's limited to Android 2.3? Not sure how this would affect KGS.
Just a thought.
I use my iPad way too much, and cannot justify having another tablet or replacing it.

The Lenovo would work as well.
I'm waiting to see how the new Nexus Tablet looks before getting something new.

I think a kindle fire or 8gb nook tablet with a custom android ice-cream sandwich mod installed would be better in that price range. I think you're going to get much better performance off a dual-core processor, but for just running KGS that may not matter.

Re: Could This Be My Solution To Mobile KGS?
Maybe belonging more in the "computer" section of the forum but since the question arose here .......
Don't simply count cores. For just running a web client, little processig power is needed. But if a matter of playing on the device (running a program against which you can play) then crunch power is the key. But CPU chips aren't equal and simply counting cores not a meaningful way to decide how much crunch power. You need to look up your CPU on a site that provides comparative bench marks.
For example, the older desktop from which I am typing this has a dual core CPU but it has only about 1/3 the power of a more recent dual core CPU. The same thing is true with quad cores.

No argument there. I don't think you were responding to my post, but just to be clear, I mentioned the single-core nature of the processor because I have some vague notion that it directly affects its ability to run certain versions of the OS or software. I don't know much about Android, and I don't recall where I got this impression (maybe in a review of the Ideapad), so I could be way off. But yeah, number of cores is not a proxy for determining processing power.

In this case I think we can safely assume the 1ghz dual core is superior to the 1ghz single core.

Thanks for this advice. I will look into these. "Rooted" sounds like it might be beyond my technical expertise. Are we talking about jail breaking?
So the Galaxy Tablet might be a better fit for me.
Does that run current android software or is it an earlier generation too?

Re: Could This Be My Solution To Mobile KGS?
Thanks for all of the advice.
I will probably wait until returning from the U.S. Go Congress before making a purchase.
Anyone with an Android tablet running KGS attending the Congress I would love to see how it works on your machine.
I am Terri Schurter and I can be found in at the 8 kyu tables during the U.S. Open.
I would be happy to meet up with people at the Congress from the forums here.

I will be at the Congress on Saturday and Sunday (leave Monday morning). I'll bring my tablet with me, so if you see me, just ask and I can show it to you.goddess wrote:Anyone with an Android tablet running KGS attending the Congress I would love to see how it works on your machine.

Thanks. I will look for you.
I should bring the KGS hat you gave me, but it doesn't leave the house for fear of losing it.
