I have a friend who bought some land in Italy a number of years ago, and was dismayed to find that he couldn't get permission to build a house on his property. Luckily, there was a law which stated that if 4 walls of a house were standing, the government couldn't order it to be torn down. So he followed the local custom and one moonlit night he and a group of friends erected the 4 walls and when morning came before the police could stop him, he had become a homeowner, though it did take a while until he actually moved in.

But back on topic - I agree that it's taking a long time, but I can report that new builds of the server are appearing with astounding regularity, and that it already has features and qualities that will take internet go to a new level. The foundation and walls and even the roof have been built, but there are still a few fixtures to be installed and carpets to be laid out etc., before the moving van arrives - but I think you'll find that it was worth waiting for. A go server isn't just a board with 4 sides.
Patience, grasshopper.

Hey guys. The feature/work list before beta has been decided a while ago, and we are actually doing the last big major change before beta release.

We are likely to announce a release date this very week :)

We are on version 0.30.0 Alpha right now. Thats 30 releases, all done weekly as per-schedule and all included improvements, fixes, changes and features.

Stay tuned :)

I am content to wait until the server is truly ready for a beta version. I think it would only hurt the project if the beta was released prematurely. People would come and check out this revolutionary new go server, but then quickly leave because it only offered a few relatively unimportant features. If this happened Kaya might not ever recover from the bad image it would receive. I am very gratified to hear that Beta is getting nearer though :)

Quite the opposite. New features are being put out every week.

I don't know how much you know about software development but stable, feature-rich software takes years even for professional teams. By this yardstick, Kaya development is lightning-fast.

Me too. :) I was mostly happy with KGS, but now that the stone sounds are gone and wms apparently doesn't plan on addressing the problem, I find myself in need of a new server.

Is there still a way to gain access by donating/paying?

Of course! You can visit the candy section http://kaya.gs/kayags/candy.php and see other available contributions, like Features.

Bear in mind we are very close to going out, so if you are patient you will get access without donating.
However, contributions help us get going, we wouldnt have been able to put all the effort we put into it without it.

I joined on July 15th, shortly before reading that they’d probably move to the public beta phase soon :-| had I know then I’d have waited since I’m somewhat short on money, but now that I paid I like it a LOT and je ne regrette rien or how it’s spelled ;)

I just separated with some money, too, even though the public beta seems to be very close :). Gabriel's been very responsive to questions and I feel that the western Go community needs a server that is actively and enthusiastically developed (with state-of-the-art technology). A little competition may help to shake things up a bit in general and also bring in new people, so it's good to support Kaya.gs.

They're only letting 200 additional people in on the initial public beta, so you may still have bought something with your money. I suppose it depends on how fast you'd see that the beta was open.

Really? Only 200 people?

Whether they're doing this to scale slowly, or control people's first impressions, I don't know.
