This guy said he was 10k. But I don't think so. I played black. Just how much of a sandbagger is he?
10k? Really?

Re: 10k? Really?
White could have been 5k. It's really hard to tell from a game.
Black 7 should block on the other side. (You need a stone around r10 to block that way.)
And if not, black 9 really must be at P4.

That which can be destroyed by the truth should be.

I think you just had a bad game, garu. A number of his moves were consistent with being 10k (for example, that first line hane in the opening). No need to assume bad faith, right?

I don't know why he "said" he was 10k, rather than having a rank. Guest? New account? It is very possible he really did think he was 10k. Maybe that's what he's been ranked at in his club, or maybe that's the rank he's honestly earned through tournaments in whatever nation he lives in. Maybe you just failed to exploit whatever weakness he has, that balances out his strength to average "10k".Garuseimasahi wrote:This guy said he was 10k.
Maybe he was sandbagging. Without full context, it's hard to tell.
If I was asked to guess at black's rank, just from this game, I would guess ~12-11k.
Anecdote: I've played some people that for all intents and purposes, I should have been able to give 2 or 3 stones handicap, and yet, even in an "even" game they would beat the snot of me. I don't think they were sandbaggers, it's just, I couldn't figure out how to play against their style.

Re: 10k? Really?
He looked like that kind of super-aggressive fight-fight-fight player that gives me trouble. They start fights with every stone you place. You make the proper defensive move but they keep attacking.
You know you are making good moves but they force you to prove it. At my level I'm playing good moves because I've been told they are good and having trouble proving it to an aggressive fighter.

This means you cannot fight. One good move is not enough -- you also need to have good follow-ups.Coyote wrote:You know you are making good moves but they force you to prove it.

If you cannot fight, all the "good" moves in your opening mean little when your opponent crushes you in a fight.
You should be happy your opponents reveal your weakness in fights.
So you need to work on your fighting skills, which means your basics.

Re: 10k? Really?
I would have said the weaker end of SDK. A combination of 10k and 5k moves in there, and he knew a few tesujis that were handy in the game, but certainly wasn't sandbagging terribly. If I was to guess, maybe 3 or 4 stones sandbagging at most.
The more important questions is, under the basis you got to play a stronger player, why are you upset about it? Some nice things to learn from that game for black

Re: 10k? Really?
Moves like 34 or 40 look like 10k moves to me.
I hope that you learned something from 47. Your response was the problem there, not his playing well. Same thing goes with the moves that let him inexplicably eat your stone there. 81 was also an inexplicably atrocious move.
He looked like a 10kyu to me. But you made some 12kyu moves in that game.
