Hi guys, sorry if this is the wrong place but I couldn't see a go resources sub-forum.

I was hoping to combine my interest in Japanese with my Go study, but I'm having difficulty finding anything useful. My impression from when I played Go but didn't speak Japanese was that there was a wealth of brilliant Go stuff I was missing out on, so I'm hoping some of the Japanese speakers here can reccomend something. I'm most interested in videos and annotated SGFs, but anything you think is worth mentioning would be appreciated. I'd also like to start following Japanese pro games as well.

Thanks for any help.

P.s. Sorry for abandoning my Malkovich games even though I said I just wanted to put them on hold. I ended up quitting go for a couple of years.

You might want to read viewtopic.php?f=8&t=4963

Also, searching for topics with "japanese" in the title seems to have some interesting things.

I can't help more than that, since my japanese is only a few words. ;-)

I can't say I've ever seen annotated sgfs. For videos, you can check out http://www.igovideo.tv. Amazon.co.jp has a ton of books and can ship anywhere.

A few classic problem collections are brilliant, but anything else?

Quite a few good books on playing go and getting better at it, but you probably knew that. :)

1) "good" is not "brilliant".

2) Which Japanese books are good, IYO?

I like quite a few and it depends what I'm looking for. Problem sets, game reviews, or strategy... I think there are too many to list easily. Right now I'm reading the 33rd Meijin series book and enjoying it.

Over the weekend I went to book off in California and got two problem books and two My com strategy books.

Sorry, I really don't plan to go through and review them all. I don't have enough time for that. I'd leave to say that I'm usually very happy with them, and there tends to be more detail and depth than in English books just due to the numbers of Japanese vs English books.

Thanks for the replies. The IGO thing looks good, though I can't get it to work. XD I guess books are the way to go. (Pun not intended but I like it)

The Nihon Ki-in has CD-ROM sets aimed at 3k, 1k, 1d, 2d, and 3d amateurs available from their online shop http://www.rakuten.co.jp/nihonkiin/ Each set includes 24 commented games and 24 problems.

Robert Jasiek: i am no moderator, so my word bears a little value, but i agree with topazg. let me add that your habit of praising your books while critising others, as much as your point of view is legit and as much as you are free to express it, might antagonize some people and you might want to reconsider whether it serves well to promote your opinion

Thanks, Gowan, but that link is all Japanese. Do they have an English page?

Thanks, do you know what format they're in, and if they could be converted to sgf? It could be interesting to pick up sometime if I could get the games and commentary to show up fine on a mobile device.

The CD-ROMs I mentioned above are titled "Warui kuse o naosu" (Fixing bad habits). They are intended for viewing on a computer with Windows OS (98, Me, 2000, XP, Vista). I don't own any of them so I don't know anything else.

Also, if you have an iThingy you can get the weekly go magazines and other publications from Nihon Kiin. It's not an SGF since you can't click through it. If you put it on a board though, it would still be good learning.

@Oren: That sounds interesting. I don't have an iDevice, but if they release it in one electronic format it seems likely they release it in others too. I'll look in to it. :study:

On their faq, they say they're looking into Android... but it's said that for about a year now. :)

It's the only app that's iThingy only I would like to play with.
