Upgrade revenue from major app upgrades would be nice in the future, but for now, enough Go players are getting an iPad or iPhone for the first time and finding SmartGo Kifu. This sale is a makeshift solution because Apple is not providing what's really needed: a way to upgrade users of one app to another. I'm still hoping they'll support that at some point; meanwhile, I work with the tools I have.
