Me (7-9k) vs. 2-4k

Post by Lamp »

This is a game I played against an unranked player who I believe to be somewhere around 2-4k based on his game history. I hate listing my ranking as 7-9k because I play really sporadically. In this game, I feel like I played at a strength close to that of my opponent until somewhere in the midgame. Sometimes I play like a 10k though, so I just say 7k since it's somewhere int he middle.

I think my biggest global mistake was in failing to use my attacking stones for profit, and instead let them turn into a weak group which forced me to connect them to a strong group while my opponent secured the entire top half of the board attacking it.

My biggest local mistake, however, was probably move 92. I feel like 92 at O14 may have won the entire game right there. But I'm not 100% sure, and there may be a way for black to escape the large-scale cut at O14, although I can't find it. Comments appreciated.

I don't feel like doing much of a review right now, but since it's been a while and there are still no replies, I figured I'd post a few comments. It goes without saying, but bear in mind the closeness of our ranks.

My honest impression was that black got ahead almost immediately, and then continued to pull away. IMHO you were far too concentrated on the left side by move 11, but the result you got approaching the bottom right is what really messed things up for you.

I'm not sure what you should have done down there, but 16 was definitely a mistake. R5 is the alternative that springs to mind.

Do you mean the Q6 stones? Those were always a weak group. They have no base and are surrounded by black stones.

O14 doesn't work.

92. O14 N14 N13 P14 O12 P13 P12 appears to kill black's entire center group. Do you have a better line of play for black?

N13, N14, M12, L12, M14, L13, P14.

Living inside might be better than breaking out with P14 though, since it damages black's top group, but more importantly, white is also weak here. There are other cutting points in white's wall, so black can break out without damaging the top, and if black finds time to play a move around G9, it seems likely that at least some, possibly all, of white's group will die.

That's better than what I found, but I wonder if L13 would be a better response for white than L12. Your sequence would then become:

N13, N14, M12, L13, L12, K12.

from here, I think white will be able to finish the cut, although there are quite a few variations.

:w8: is a bit unusual, R6 is the most played move here. This opening is called kobayashi Fuseki. (This is a video lecture from Battousai about this opening: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIeWNVuzebU)
:w12: Not a good idea, the video above shows why.
:w14: Is this joseki? I don't think it's a good idea to play this, white should attach to the corner or change directions.

:b23: This is an overplay, well it could be a good move but I think it's too soon to play this. Instead R14, D18 or F15 are my choices.
After :w54: White is behind by a large margin, as White I would resign. White can still invade the top but that won't be enough I think. Yoou lost too much in the opening, but After watching the video lecture you should see where you messed up and why ;-)
