What rank would I be?

Post by haidri5254 »

Hello everyone,
I was just wondering if you could tell me what my go rank would be based on this game. I've asked countless people and nobody has answered. It will be a great help if you could tell me.
Thanks a lot!
P.S: If these games aren't enough, I will post more. Do not look at my previous games. I have improved since then and please do not judge me on the joseki unless it is absolutely essential to my rank.

I doubt anyone can give an accurate rating based on seeing your games. You're probably best just signing up to KGS or somewhere and playing until your rank settles.

Regardless, I've included your game in my post so people can see it more easily. To do that you right click on the attachment link (you have preview your post to do this) and select copy link location, then past that between some SGF tags.

oh well. Do you think there is a faster way than just playing. Well, i went to this one website called http://play.baduk.org/go-test/start.php? and this is what it said:
Thank you! Your score is 112 from 200.
You are about European 9-kyu (you can convert this grade to other ranking-systems by using this table )

Please don't be disappointed if this mark is lower than your real grade.
We were mainly trying to test your understanding of the game.

Your actual rank depends on your reading skill, your ability to make decisions under time pressure, your state of health and many other factors.
Im not sure if this is right though.

Only way to tell is to play a lot of games. Also your rank will depend on what you want it for. An AGA rank is not a KGS rank which is not an IGS rank, etc, etc...

Play a lot of games and your rank will be set by where you play.

I find it nearly impossible to judge ranks other than beginner->intermediate->dan-level

Basically, I can tell when people don't have a solid grasp on the rules (beginner), when they understand the rules but they're not immediately pursuing weaknesses (intermediate), and folks who I may disagree with, but I see the logic (dan-level)

Trying to get the resolution below that is just too hard.

Something else to consider is that there isn't just one type of person at any rank.

Someone might be playing extraordinarily strange moves, that I would know that I could punish, but which people at that level can't punish at all. I might give that person a much lower rank than a person who played slow but solid moves, because the latter didn't leave obvious ways for ME to kill them.

These two might actually be the same rank, or the first person might actually be stronger, but I'm going to view ranks through the lens of what I can punish.

EDIT: and given this, I give you the rank "Intermediate"
Tactics yes, Tact no...

Meh, it tells me I'm 6k EGF and 10k EGF would be pushing it in reality. When I was a KGS 20k it was telling me that I was an EGF 12k or something silly like that. Don't take that result seriously at all. :)

Rank depends on shower. More shower, less rank.

It is indeed very hard to accurately measure the rank based on a game, especially near beginner levels. But I play some egf 8/9 kyus regularly at the club and I have to say, both players in this game are clearly below that level. How much I can't say for sure, but I guess there's at least a 3-4 stone difference.

If you want to know your rank, just play enough games on a go server until your rank is stable. Or, if you play at a club, play enough games to figure out a proper handicap with a player who knows his rank and go from there.

Indeed, I've taken that test too about 3 times and each time it was different. The first time it said I was 12k, then 3k and then 15k the third time. Albeit over a 6 month period, but goes to show that it not a good indicator. My advice; play lots of games and above all enjoy the game. Good Luck haidri5254!

I'd say that you are around 17-20K. But as others have said, it is really hard to tell at that level.

To get you to a better rank, I'll offer some advice.

1) Get in the habit of counting liberties.
Look at the board after move 205. You can steal a few stones here. You play move 206 at A10. If he doesn't reply with B10, you capture his two stones. If he does reply with B10, then you play 208 at A12, and you've killed the entire group.

EDIT: After you've played with the position a bit, and you understand why it works, can you see where he should have played move 205 to avoid the loss?
Hint: He should play the move that most restricts your liberties.
He should play A12.
2) Learn basic endgame moves.
Also at move 206, you have moves like S1 and T17. Most beginners don't appreciate how big these moves are.
