What style is best for specific reading?

Post by NoSkill »

I think im better at reading out or calculating small details rather than realizing the end effect of the whole board, which would explain why I am weak in the opening but better at fighting. So I am wondering if I should play a moyo or cosmic style to cause fights... or what would be the best style opening for me?

An example of a pro game that looks similar to my style:

One perfect way to occur fight is, try to win with the biggest point gap.

The craziest fighting games happens in bangneki. I don't know english for this but it is a betting go, the winner earns certain amount of money multiplied by each 10 points win, bigger win bigger earn.

If you want to be better at fighting, solve many many many many many many many ... life and death problems as much as you can, *(edit) but never give up solving, nothing gets better when you keep giving up.

Right I know that doing L&D helps the playstyle, but what kind of opening should I use to GET there? Fighting doesn't happen in every game or out of nowhere, so I wonder if a cosmic, moyo, or just approaching style is better? One thing I know is reading alot, taking my time, and playing solid will be keys to winning these games.

Before I have said I am weak in the opening and better at fighting... but really its more like im better at seeing tesuji in mid-game fighting for snapbacks, kos, or making life etc. So its more like L&D situations or such.

What im not good at is a moyo vs moyo game where it is very calm, or something like that. Im okay at attacking weak groups to make a profit, but the easiest thing for me to do is make a big whole board fight IE with tengen I feel comfortable.

My only other thing I feel like im better at than some people my rank is endgame, where usually if it makes it past the fight the game is even or im a bit behind, and i win by 5 pts or something by the end.

As I wrote before, just "try to win with the biggest point gap", this way, you won't let the game be a moyo vs moyo style cuz it is hard to win with a big point gap in those type of games. If your opponent try's to make a moyo, invade, and do anything you can do to destroy your opponent's structure and win.

I'd try one of the weird openings, like the Great Wall or something like it. I play sanrensei a lot, and most of my games turn into fighting.

It might be very different at your rank level, though.

Two ways to get intense fighting games:

1. Build large moyos, then fight when your opponent invades.
2. Take territory everywhere, then fight after invading you opponent's moyos.

Also there are joseki that leave both players with unsettled groups to worry about, and this favor the player with better fighting skills (or so I think).

I don't think any good player can get out of whole board positional judgement. Even one of the most assertive players, Kato, who was known for his group killing prowess, eventually shifted his style to an endgame specialist.

Two josekis that are famous for this is the avalanche joseki and taisha. Especiaily taisha leaves both players with weak groups and fight for the center :-) The only problem is that most people will play the easy variations where you don't have to fight.

My advice on getting into lots of fights would be to overplay :-) Make way too big extensions etc. Also if you love fighting, just go on tygem server, there is almost no match without fighting or overplay :-)

Cheers,

Indeed, here is a fun game of mine with the large avalanche. There was no fuseki, the entire game was fighting that sprawled across the board from that first joseki.

Go is a game for two players and it is always your opponent, who decides, what kind of game it will be. At least for me, it always turns out, that I can't get the kind of game, which I would have liked to play.

Personally, if I feel I am stronger in some part of the game, I try to emphasize the other parts to become more balanced. So if you are strong in fighting, try to play a calm game / to evaluate the board better / to win in the endgame.
