FREE offer from Slate and Shell (for customers only)

Post by tchan001 »

Look what just came in my email. Hurry Hurry for this as it won't last long.

CYBER MONDAY IS SO 20TH CENTURY
Yeah, free shipping is nice
Yeah, free wrapping is nice
Yeah, getting a discount is nice
WE'RE TAKING THIS TO IT'S LOGICAL CONCLUSION AND
GIVING AWAY
A DIGITAL GAME COMMENTARY BY YUAN ZHOU

Very similar in style to 'Deep Thought', this book is an extremely thoroughly commented SGF file of the famous Meijin title game match between Rin Kaiho and Ishida Yoshio. If you've ever read any of Yuan Zhou's books, you'll know how illuminating his commentary can be. If you don't know his work, here's an opportunity to check him out for free!
Just email customerservice@slateandshell.com and we'll send you the file.
Please note that, in order to get the most from this file, you'll need a robust SGF reader. We use SmartGo, but our readers tell us that there are other good readers available.
Offer Expires: WINTER SOLSTICE 2012 (21 DECEMBER)

UPDATE:
I just received information from S&S that the SGF file is "intended solely as a gift for our customers." So if you were a customer, hurry hurry.

Further Update:
Wow, just got my copy and I concur that this one is an extremely thorough commentary with about 80% of the moves of the games with some kind of comment. And there are quite a few comments which are quite lengthy. The sgf is 45k in size for just one game.

If you aren't a customer, you might start looking around their catalog to see what might interest you and make a purchase. And perhaps if you ask for the sgf along with your order you can get a copy. Good luck.

Apparently it is not free for everyone.

I emailed very nicely expressing that I would like a copy of the file to sample their product (as I have never had access to a Yuan Zhou book) as well as information on their shipping to China.

They emailed me twice and said I would be added to their database for the next time a promotion came up, but didn't send me the file.

They told me the same thing.

Great!

I have been waiting for Volume 3 of Shuko's Tesuji Dictinary to be reprinted which they just did.

I have now ordered a copy and requested the the free .sgf commentary. Let's see if they will send it for Christmas.

UPDATE:

Ordered the books and received the .sgf commentary!

Greetings,
Zhou Yuan teaches on KGS as Jaguar. As a private teacher he is incredibly good.
The student is taken through one of their games move by move and is continually asked 'why did you do that?' or 'what were you thinking about at that point? '
He doesn't pull a single punch and by the end it can feel like you have been turned inside out. The books he has written which analyze pro games all contain this level of detail explained in extremely accessible fashion for all but the absolute beginner. They actually make great bedtime reading. I hope through this offer all his books become better known as they demonstrate both the incredible knowledge and the ability to communicate that knowledge effectively that this guy has in spades.
Cheers,
Buri
