tsumego books accesible to non-go players

Post by SmoothOper »

Are there any good tsumego books that would be accessible to non-go players(IE my wife) I don't think my tesuji or yose books would work, ideally they would also appeal to me, but not 100% necessary.

Graded Go Problems for Beginners, Vol. 1 may be a good choice. It literally starts with pulling a stone out of atari, and moves on from there.

I haven't looked at the later volumes, but I suspect Vol. 2 is a good follow up.

That isn't quite what I was thinking about, since it seems to cover tesuji as well as tsumego. I am thinking more like Hye Yeon's tsumego app. I just went and looked at the beginner section, which I has skipped. Each of the problems is isolated from the whole board, maybe I will see if she would be interested in it.

Cho U has made some little books of go puzzles for kids on a 4x4 board. They are not really using familiar Go shapes so Go knowledge doesn't really help with them, they are more like puzzles for the back of a newspaper so are probably more accessible to non-Go players.

The app worked. my wife was gleefully guessing and testing her way through the 30 kyu problems.

I guess the next question is, how to keep the indoctrination going, and expand. I expect at some point the problems become too hard.

Best problems collection for absolute beginners has EasyGo - it has really huge library. HY Creative tsumego app mentioned above has very bad interface in my opinion, and there is a lot of bad design decisions.

For a complete beginner I suggest this nice introduction to go:

That's not quite the idea in the OP. It's not to get someone introduced to Go. It's to get them to do Go problems without being introduced to Go.

Right, do go problems no go playing involved. Think crossword puzzles or sudoku. My wife is progressing pretty well through HY's book, she even played out a ladder. She thinks the 17 kyu puzzles are hard. The ranking system seems to give a sense of accomplishment kind of like video games, but some of the problems seem to be of the same difficulty, others are quite a bit more difficult though.

It would be nice to switch over to problem books at some point, but the app seems to be more enjoyable for now, because once you look at the solution to a paper problem you see the whole thing. Maybe I could set up problems on a board.

It's impossible to do problems without being introduced to the rules of play. The tutorial I suggested is a very nice step-by-step problem-based introduction (capture, double atari, ladders, nets, eyes and so on). Even my ex-gf liked it though she had no interest in go at all. Give it a try ;)

I don't think that is true, for example scoring rules aren't necessary for simple capture and life and death problems.
