1001 GoGoD games for your Coffee Break #58 (27 March 2013)

Post by TMark »

Here is an international match which is unusual for two reasons. The first was that the players bid for komi. Shi Hongyi bid 6.5 points to take White and Imamura accepted immediately. However, Imamura made a slight mistake in this game; he forgot to press his clock and ran out of time. Some years ago I played in a tournament with komi bidding and I had decided to bid only 5.5 and automatically accept any higher bid. I ended playing White in all three games and won them all.

Best wishes.

Interesting, do you think if komi bidding were widely adopted you could see a situation where players became prototypical black players always playing black and giving say 7.5 or 8.5 komi just for the initiative, and having the option to choose the fuseki.

DGS has auction komi, so you can try it out and see. I haven't tried it personally, but now I think I might...
