Quick review for Aphelion's game (focuses mostly on Aphelion's moves, since he helped me out for something else):

Thanks for the great review Araban! How do you find some of those sequences you listed? With some of them (for example, the cut at top left), I was vaguely aware that they exist, but I can't find them / play them out because I couldn't read out in game and the outcome seemed like they could be disaster for me if the sequence doesn't work. I suppose its almost all just reading, but is there a knowledge component to it that you can say - I know this works, so you can play out the sequence even if you can't read out the sequence completely?

I'd say some of it is reading, but a lot of it is intuition and prior knowledge. Using the same example of the cut on the top left, the cut immediately came to my mind after H17 was played because that move protects the cut at G17, which in turn allows for you to cut W at E16. This is something that I picked up from reading a textbook a long time ago that just stuck to my mind because the top pattern is pretty common and so putting what I've learned to application wasn't difficult. Furthermore, there are a handful of joseki variations that have similar shape and so bring up the same discussion.

Intuition also helped me find the cut because the overall shape of White's corner ranks of bad aji if White doesn't bamboo joint at D15. As you improve your aji senses will improve as well and good/bad shape is critical in sensing whether there is a good chance or not there may be an exploit in your opponent's shape. Also, separating your opponent's groups is always something to keep in mind, and since such a cut certainly accomplishes this, it was immediately considered.

So yes, there is definitely a knowledge component to it, as well as intuition; both of which are built up as you move up the ranks.

People should announce when they plan to play so we can watch if we happen to be available :)
That which can be destroyed by the truth should be.

Look at it this way, you'll get a game review in real time :D

I think anything that increases interest in the tournament within the group is a good thing.

I feel good to have an audience, but usually i don't have any. And if there happens to be one, he must come to watch my opponent.

We'll get a time together that works eventually.

And it's a great idea letting people know when the matches are scheduled. Even if that does add some pressure that there may be an audience to watch. ;)

Looks like Phelan and I will be playing Wednesday 18:00 MDT (GMT-6) (otherwise known as Thursday 01:00 (GMT+1)).

Let me know if I interpreted your last message incorrectly Phelan. I look forward to our game! :D
