I just finished watching Season 1 of the anime Chihayafuru, and I really think it would appeal to many Hikaru No Go fans. It's not about Go--it's about the Japanese card came karuta--but has a lot of the same themes that make HNG so engaging, including the sense of having a window into a hitherto unknown aspect of Japanese culture. (Also, there's a romantic subplot, but it doesn't interfere with the tournament and training storylines.)
Not saying it's likely to supplant HNG by any means, or fuel a worldwide karuta boom, but if you're feeling the need to recapture some of the passion of competition, you could do worse than give this show a chance. I couldn't help occasionally thinking, "I wish this was about Go," but the karuta was very interesting, too.
For those in the US, it's streamed on Crunchyroll or Anime News Network. Not sure where those of you in different areas might be able to watch it.
