I don't remember saying they did mean that.

korean baduk magazine talked about this few years they implemented 6.5 komi.
according to their stat:
5.5 komi black has advantage

6.5 black winning percentage still higher overall. (that was more than 10 years ago so stats might have changed since)
but white percentage was higher in when they have plenty of time to think.
also top 10 players play better in white than lower seated.

i can not remember what issue but i remember reading about it.

My personal feeling.. 6.5 komi is better for white.

i am curious..does chess have advantage playing first?

Yup.
And there is no komi.

Of course, there is the wide drawing margin, which helps, but still... chess is a tough game. ;)

I think this is pretty far off topic, but chess doesn't take as long so they do best of 5 best of 7 ... best of 21 to figure out who is a better player, so who goes first isn't as important, furthermore they don't rank based on how many moves a player can concede their opponent and still win, nor is it a point based game.

Just my 2 cents:

Komi has a greater influence on higher dan's than on lower kyu's this is probably due to the fact that lower kyu's can't count. I can only see differences higher than 20 points. A 10 point difference, scattered over the board, is completely invisible to me. I lost games that I was quite certain to have one.

Komi has an influence on game play. Black seems more agressive cause white has a bonus.

Thus, by changing Komi you also change the game. So if Komi is decided to be 7.5 today, white will probably win some games at first, but new tactics for black will surface in say, 10 years, that will force us to rethink it again.

That said, I still believe there is much more psychological influence on the color you pick than it is agreed on.

In chess, black or white is a matter of chance. In Go, it's light against darkness, the master against the disciple, Obi-wan vs. Darth Vader.

You don't learn Go as white. You are black for a long time.

My ideal experience, is to have go students change colors with their teachers for some games. i.e. the student would play white with handicap. And record the win/loose ratio for say, 50 games.

But as I said before, those are just my 16k 2c.
