What I seem to be realizing is that pro moves are so good because they really give so much consideration into each move, and this consideration is supported by first, a wealth of knowledge, and second, the ability to read out long sequences and subsequently compare and evaluate their subtle differences.

I don't do that, and basically, it's because I can't. I can't remember any but the simplest positions accurately, and I am lousy at visualizing a sequence - let alone judging the result before it's on the board. On the contrary, I can hardly distinguish the good results from the bad when I look at them in the diagrams in the books I'm reading.

I think that what I'm realizing is that although the game I'm playing is called go, it's not really, because the game I'm playing is a game of chance.

To improve on making more and more profound planning, one needs to acquire the skills, which you describe to be still missing:
- constructing sequences in reading at all and then well
- imagining (parts of) positions occurring after a reading sequence
- accurately evaluating the current position and aforementioned imagined positions and comparing such evaluations
- in particular, distinguishing good from bad
- learning, understanding and applying go theory knowledge, with which to construct good sequences and evaluate well
- develop move filters and selection procedures, so that the numbers of remaining representative next (imagined) moves becomes reasonably small or small enough for one's abilities of reading and mental storage
- etc.

All these things and skills are acquired and constantly improved for every rank. IMO, it really starts at 5 kyu, when playing "by educated guessing" starts to be replaced by playing "by verification".

You are right that there is much to be learnt. You better start now, or will not reach the "verification" level:) At about 2k, IMX, one can at least roughly distinguish most good from most bad, slightly unfavourable or fair positions. Take the related study as one of your motivations to become 2k! Whenever you see a diagram in any book, ask youself: roughly what is the judgement?
