If I'd blinked at the wrong time I might have missed the paltry number of comments on the demise of Go World, but I think at least Richard Bozulich and John Power got some mention. There were, however, also some others who kept the ship afloat, and one of them was indexer par excellence Jochen Fassbender.
Jochen has just delivered to GoGoD (for the upcoming summer issue) the final instalment of the in-depth index to the 129 issues. There is, however, also an on-line version at http://www.yk.rim.or.jp/~kiseido/GWINDE ... ro.html#is and there he mentions some interesting and very impressive statistics.
For example, there are 1,660 games and 770 individuals in the complete set of GW issues (with a total of nearly 8,500 pages).
I would like to ask you to applaud the equally impressive work of Jochen himself. As well as putting in the hours for indexing he has also studied the art. He may be the only person who has ever read every single world of Go World, but in the process he has also spotted errors and inconsistencies (not too many!), so that those who treasure their sets of GW should really append a copy of his index for that reason alone. Of course, practicality comes first, and on that score I can only say that I have used the index gratefully many, many times.
Jochen has also done a separate index to Go Review (nb not Go Monthly Review).
So, please, credit where credit is due.
Kudos to Jochen Fassbender
