SPOT1 begins tonight on KGS

Post by xed_over »

The 1st AGA Strong Players Online Tournament (SPOT1) begins tonight at 7pm (I wonder if that's eastern time or pacific? -- that would be, what, 4pm for me on the west coast?)

AGA front page news: http://www.usgo.org/index.html

Main tournament site: http://www.ngol.us/Home.html (pairings are posted)

The schedule at the web page also mentions EST for later rounds, but probably everyone on the east coast is on EDT.

Sigh, I was in this...until I got disqualified for my membership not being "continuous" in the past year; in other words, there was a gap between membership renewals in the past that I didn't cover. I think it makes sense that membership should be active by the time of the tournament, but don't really understand this requirement; anyways, apparently I'm not the only one and last year it was even worse so can't complain too much :D.

Bah. I saw your name there, and was rooting for the two GD members that I knew. I was finding it strange that your name wasn't there anymore.

Now I've also lost the reason to follow the tournament too. Why did you go and let that happen? :)

Meh, the TD gave me the option to raise an objection and see if I could discuss with the AGA about it, but I figure it'd cause too much problems for the TD due to time constraint and the pressure it'd add on him, so I didn't bother. I'll just remember to always make sure my membership doesn't lapse :p.

So, I didn't get to see any of the games on Saturday, but I did see a few games on Friday. I believe shapenaji had one the best games. It was very interesting near the end. I don't know by what count, but I was pretty sure that the game was down to the last fight to decide who would win or lose.
I know nothing.

Eight 2-0 players move on to the sweet 16 (starts next weekend)
Eight 0-2 players are out

Today starts the head-to-head playoffs to break the 1-1 ties in each of the eight groups.

I'll not list them all here like I've been doing. The main website has been updated.

There have been a few upsets and surprises along the way, most involving what I like to call -- internet weather.

The rules for this even specifically call out that if you get disconnected, you risk losing on time. At least two players have so far, and one of them twice.

The odd thing about lag on KGS, your client may still think you are connected when you play your move and the clock switches to your opponent -- but the server didn't get that move, so it thinks your clock is still running. Now both players think the other player has run out of time (they were both in byo-yomi).
