I thought apps could create file associations that would then be offered? Certainly pdfs are handled this way for me: I get an option to look at them in iBooks or GoodReader.Boidhre wrote:bleep wrote:Thanks very much for the swift and helpful response.
Just to confirm though - there is no way to get it going using only the Ipad? That's unfortunate if it is the case, as I purchased it mostly for when I am travelling.
If you have a web connection you can use Go Eye, which has an in-built browser, to view sgfs straight from the web. Unfortunately, due to Apple restrictions, regular iPad browsers can't download files for opening by other apps.

Boidhre, you are wrong more than ever - I use iCab Mobile all the time, downloading/uploading any kind of files, dropbox integration, firefoxsync and 1000 other features. No restrictions. Only safari and chrome are crippled browsers. Others are much better.

I'm playing a game on DGS - how do I take that game into Smartgo on the Ipad so that I can look at it there?
Just use iCab Mobile browser - it's full desktop browser for iphone/ipad.

For Dragon Go Server from Safari you can also tap on "Download SGF", then Open in... SmartGo Kifu (or EasyGo, both have file type extensions enabled.)
I don't see the need to do anything complicated, this is the standard way of opening files via Safari and iOS.

You are right. Using a safari is good enough if you want to download and open a file. Nothing more is needed. iCab has just a very good upload feature with full download manager which made my safari app getting dust

If uploading files is a must, then indeed Safari (and Chrome) suck. But since I don't upload that often... I can have a coffee instead of iCab

Yeah my knowledge appears to be outdated here. Downloading files used to be a nightmare in browsers a few years ago and Apple's support for it in iOS was lacklustre and fairly all over the place for anything but the most common document types. I settled into a pattern of using apps other than a browser for handling files years ago and am stuck in my ways.

Re: SmartGo Kifu 3.0 is out now!
I am using iCab to browse with, but if I click on download sgf, it tells me that "the file sgf.php cannot be displayed." Pressing and holding does not bring up an option to open in another application.
As I said, the previous method works, I am just adding this for completeness' sake.
It does offer me that option when I open it in Safari, however.

Which site does not work in iCab? DGS works fine. iCab notify you that it can not show it but after you hit ok it downloads a file and it is available in download manager. Let me know what sites exactly aren't working for you.
A Tip: If iCab downloads sgf or any other file but with wrong name you can always rename a file within it's download manager to a correct one.

Re: SmartGo Kifu 3.0 is out now!
Hi lobotomy,
Ok, I retract my previous statement - It does come up with an error, at which point I had previously stopped, but you are right - if you ignore the message, and go to the downloads, you can then open it in Smartgo.
Thanks for the help, bit of a wally when it comes to this sort of thing.

Just posted a minor update at http://smartgo.com/mac.htm.
Thanks for the update
Very excited to hear that a Mac version is in the works ! Think this could potentially be huge, since the only other good program out there for Macs, that I know of and own, is "Sente Goban" (which after a very long time was only very recently resurrected).
[I currently have both SmartGo Kifu and SmartGo Books on my iPhone.]

Re: SmartGo Kifu 3.0 is out now!
Dear Anders,
Thank you for this update and for making available the GOGOD on the iPad. The app with its novel tree view is really awesome.
For me there is only one flaw in this gem: not to be able to import zipped sgf files. I do not understand why this feature is not implemented. There are many legal free or commercial game / problem databases at hand and importing files one at a time is just tedious.
I know this is possible with another app, but I don't like having my data scattered over several apps. Better having everything under the same roof.
Best,
