Theory books or problem books?

Post by tekesta »

Anyone know whether these Chinese books are theory books or problem books? I have been thinking of purchasing these to better learn weiqi fundamentals.

Below is an image of one of the books on the above webpage. I believe this to be the volume on endgame.

What do you expect to find in fundamentals? Which books on the topic have you already read? Which is your rank?

If your theory is weak, you need theory books. If your reading is weak, you need problem books. If both are weak, you need both.

They are problem books and I like them very much, although I have only used the tesuji volumes.

Are they enjoyable even if your Chinese reading ability is more or less null?

I can't comment on this specific book but I have the Yi Ch'ang-Ho series in Chinese and as long as you know the Hanzi for Black (黑), White (白) and correct/solution (正) you are good to go -as far as problem books are concerned.

And you can actually do without 正 . ;)

I can recommend the tesuji and life & death parts of the series where the problems are mostly if not all Black to move. But I'd stay away from the endgame book if you don't understand Chinese because it'll often ask you to calculate the value of the endgame plays as well so this would test your Chinese knowledge or lack thereof considerably more.

Are you talking about the YCH series or the series from the top of this thread?

... It worked finally. I have now received these books and like cdybeijing I think that the books are good. Around 800 problem/ book. 11 books in the series. 5 tesuji, 5 tsumego and one yose.
The tsumgo and tesuji books are from 10 kyu - 3 dan.
