KGS lag - a solution?

Post by mhlepore »

Several months ago I started a topic on KGS lag, explaining that KGS had:
1) suddenly developed a lot of lag on my computer, and
2) that this lag was not present when I played on my wife's computer, even though we both were using the same wireless network. (we both have macs, and mine is newer than hers)

Others chimed in with a variety of suggestions and personal stories of similar difficulty.

Anyway, I recently found out that my internet provider (Comcast) increased its speed some time ago, and it turned out that my modem/router were several years old and not equipped to deal with the changes to the ISP. When we installed a new modem/router in our home, my KGS lag problem disappeared. I used to lose games on time with 30 minutes of main time and five 30 second byoyomi periods. Now I can play three 10 second byoyomi periods and not have a concern about timing out.

If anyone else is having lag problems, check your modem/router and make sure it is up to date.

Thanks to KGS and sorry for inferring that it could have been a problem on your end.

It's extremely odd that a router change would fix that when it wasn't an issue on your wife's machine on the same network. There was probably some issue with your old router and your new Mac's wireless card or something.

The thing I'd do, as Boidhre basically suggested, is get a LAN cable from somewhere (do people still know what that is?) and rule out wireless-voodoo as a first step.

Did you have these lag issues when connected via cable?

Either way, have fun playing blitz ;)

Oh snap, it's "Ethernet cable" in English, right?

In Germany we call it "LAN Kabel", I just translated that word for word.
Though nowadays kids in Germany refer to it as "WLAN Kabel" (no joke).

Heh. An easy mistake to make. :)

Ethernet cable is correct, network cable would be the informal term that I've heard people use. "The internet cable" being the colloquial. :D

Not sure about directly hooking to an ethernet cable - either way there is no longer a problem. :-)

which, I think, everybody should understand.

yeah, after being sent to get such a cable when they began their apprenticeship :-D

In Germany also called “Patch-Kabel”; official, I think, is “CAT 5E RJ45 ethernet cable” or something.

Patch cable refers to quite a number of types of cable depending on context here. E.g. RJ45 Ethernet or RJ11 telephone line cables. It may be being used incorrectly in the latter, I don't know.
