Google Map with Go Clubs worldwide

Post by Bonobo »

Here’s a Google Map with Go Clubs worldwide.

Dylan Carter posted this in Go (Weiqi) Players on Facebook.

For propagating a master list of Clubs and regular Go events for your country (like from BGA, AGA, DGoB, etc.), I recommend using a custom icon near your country name instead of a normal pin, like already done for Germany and Great Britain with “i” markers.

Come on, folks, let’s play face to face :-)

Greetings, Tom

Huh?... what happened to PromoteGo you mentioned recently? Went belly-up? I can't connect to it anymore.
IgoLocal, PromoteGo, now this... what makes those services fold? Lack of need? Yes, no?
Why should this one fare any better?

I think it might be worthwhile to figure out what the problem is.
In principle - its a good thing to have a map like that, I think. As long as it is stable.

Heh, meanwhile I’ve come to find that if you find critical words instead of, or before, supportive ones, everything is within normal parameters, and therefore all is well :-)

<edit>

And no idea about promotego.org. Since that was a “serious” programming project, Alf Mikula might have found that it’s not worth his time and/or money, which I could understand, in a way.

And I believe the Google infrastructure is not going to go away any time soon.

Hey!!...
I don't have critical words - just the opposite! As I said - such service is cool and needed, I think.
This is why I take my time and respond.

But I see such services keep fizzling out recently, and I think it might be productive to figure out *why* before starting another one. In the long run, if the reason for such bad run is known, the problem might be fixed and the service might live long and prosper.

I don't care if they prosper, but like L19, there should be a plan for when they do fail, how we can keep the data going.

Yes, that too.
I fully agree.

Which makes me think....
Maybe we should make a list of 'essential' services for our community, and make some effort to make those services going regardless of personal issues or whatnot. Somebody can be responsible for it or run it, but when this person folds or drops out, provisions can be made to have the service running regardless. Sort-of like having a manager for the service.

I would assume #1 on any such list would be the forum - L19 in this case.
A good list of clubs and/or players with locations would be on the list too.
A server? Not sure if a 'community' server is viable, and there are many alternatives, but still...

What else? Any thoughts? Or is this just a silly idear?

Bantari, it was just because the first thing you jumped in with was scepticizm (OK, this time not criticizm) ;-)

Didn’t mean to pick on you, just some kidding.

One reason this one may succeed could be b/c of the infrastructure that Google provides. All other solutions were works in progress done by single enthusiastic developers, and that alone may wear out the enthusiasm after time.

<bump> because people still go to the obsolete thread about the now-defunct promotego.org ;-)
(I’ve edited the opening post of that thread to reflect the new facts.)
