IMHO, this is the only advantage Chess as over Go. Really cool sets like this: Monster Chess

I'll always remember Battle Chess fondly. Even if I was always bad at it. :)

I had completely forgotten about Battle Chess. I used to play it when I was a kid, even though I had no idea what I was doing. I liked watching the Rook squish pawns with its fist (at least I think that's how it went).

Back on topic--while there are some cool go sets out there, it's just a fact that black and white stones are somewhat more restricted in appearance than chess pieces.

proposition for a "cool" looking go set.....

you could use little army men pieces like in the game risk.....

I actually tried this once :D. I bought enough tiny C3P0 and R2D2 figures to make a "Star Wars" themed Go set. Unfortunately, It was almost impossible to play. It was very difficult to read the board and as the game progressed it became common for figures to get knocked over and take down whole groups like dominoes. There is a practical reason Go stones are solid colors and sit close to the surface of the board, not just aesthetics.

There was a post about a set like this on GD, with Warhammer pieces, I think.

Strongly suggests a modified ruleset.

Any piece whose move captures an opponent's piece is also removed from the board.

The only way I see to take this idea and put it in Go form, is to put tiny pictures on the stones. But, that seems kind of cheesey. :o

That's an awesome chess set! :D I want, though I have too many chess sets.

Also, I think that chess has many advantages over go. However, it was the game that I picked up first, so I'm hardwired to be loyal to it.

I also think Go has it's advantages.

yes there was, but I think he stopped because 2x 180 pieces was too expensive.

here is a picture of it from the godiscussions post

*edit. I looks fun, but i bet it's confusing when playing with it.

chess pieces are not uniform by nature, but Go stones are uniform allowing for a better overview of the whole board.

Like Suji, I am better at chess than go. I love both games, but here are a few things I miss about chess when I am away from it for too long:

I like the fact that pieces have different qualities. Pieces can work together in interesting ways that are not possible when all pieces are identical. In particular the difference between pawns and other sorts of pieces creates a really interesting balance between static and dynamic qualities in a position.

I know that go is a lot more dynamic than it looks from the fact that stones do not move, but chess is more dynamic still. Positions can change into very different positions over the course of a game (and sure, I know about furikawari etc., but the transformation of one sort of position to another is more important still in chess).

I prefer chess endgames to go endgames. In go endgames the life and death of groups has been settled, and what's left is largely a (very interesting!) math problem. Chess endgames can remain very dynamic and exciting all the way to the end.

And by the way, I think these wacky chess sets are an abomination. It's like trying to read a classic novel printed in a ransom note font.

I find kaya gobans and slate & shell stones far more attractive than chess sets. Anybody agrees with me?

I think a nice chess set looks pretty good (novelty chess sets don't count). I couldn't justify getting one myself though.
