One-Color Go is a lot of fun. I decide to play out a famous game using only white stones and it was an interesting (if confusing) experience. I thought I would share some of the fun by posting one-color versions of famous games. All snapshots are taken at move 67 because I wanted to be consistent and that move was significant in one of the games.

Can you figure out what any of these games are based on the one-color version?

The Ear Reddening Game - Gennan Inseki (W) vs. Kuwabara Shusaku (B) - Move 67 at L17

Of course this had to be included. If the lower right makes your head hurt, then never, ever play taisha in one color go.

The Broken Ladder Game - Hong Chang Sik (W) vs. Lee Sedol (B) - Move 67 at D12

The ladder is just starting and history is about to be made! Lee Sedol's skillful use of ladders in this game and the final result have made it one of the most studied and talked about games of the modern era.

Mirror Go Ladder Game - Fujisawa Hosai (W) vs. Sugiuchi Masao (B) - Move 67 at B5

This bizarre game looks totally ludicrous in one-color form. Fujisawa Hosai was famous for playing mirror go as white. He does so in this game and then Sugiuchi Masao traps both sides in opposing ladders. In the end, black escapes from his ladder and this forces white to deviate from mirroring. Fujisawa sadly lost.

Beating the Meijin - Kaiho Rin (W) vs. Kageyama Toshiro (B) - Move 67 at D11

This is the game from the Appendix of "Lessons in the Fundamentals of Go" where Kagayama Toshiro discusses how he defeated the reigning Meijin in the Prime Minister's Cup. Considering how prominent the book is there is no doubt that thousands of people have studied this game through Kageyama's commentary.

9th Kisei, Game 4 - Cho Chikun (W) vs. Takemiya Masaki (B) - Move 67 at P4

While not amazingly famous in-and-of-itself, this game is an example of the famous Cho Chikun dual 3-3 opening being used effectively against Takemiya Masaki. This is an important point in Cho's book about the 3-3 point opening. Cho won this game by just half a point and went on to hold the Kisei title in a 4-3 series win against Takemiya.

I recognized the ear-reddening game and Lee Sedol's broken ladder game, both of which I've seen before. I don't think I've seen any of the other games and thus didn't recognize them.

I recognized the 1st and 3rd, they have really distinctive shapes and I've seen them on SL before.

I've also seen the 2nd, but couldn't make out what it is.

I wonder if someone could tell if you moved a couple of stones a little^^

I recognized the first and third but I wouldn't have recognized the first if another 20 or so moves had been included. It would be more interesting to present the games move by move rather than in a single, unnumbered, diagram. If I gave a diagram with the first eight moves in one color, without giving the sequence of moves, there would likely be hundreds of games that could have yielded that diagram. So, because we don't know the order of moves, I believe that there might well be other games that could yield some of these diagrams. Still fun to think about, though.

P.S. What if the diagrams had been shown from a different perspective? Would we have recognized the "ear-reddening" game if the diagram were from the other player's point of view?

I didn't know any of the patterns! Well, I naturally assumed you'd have the ear-reddening game here, and the first diagram seemed like the most likely to be that game. But I didn't remember the position of this game well enough to be able to construct it by myself, independently of your diagrams, for example.

First :w1: threatens to remove an eye at :b2:, so black must protect it.
Then, due to a shortage of liberties black cannot play at 'a' and dies. If black plays at :w5: then white plays at :b4: making the eye false.

Is this right?

I was going to post a 1 color solution but unless you know what color I think the stones are it is hard for you to correct me. :)
