I wasn't going to make a response in this thread, but I figure it would probably be best to just say that I'm not offended by tchan's decision.

Yes, my post was a joke, an attempt to parody the ridiculous nature of online advertising. My reason for using the real product names was because, in each statement, the name of the shoe has something to do with the go terms. The reason I used the full product name in the third one is because I found it funny how ridiculously long the name was. I thought that would be the best way to make the joke work. I don't think I was wrong; I think this made it funnier. Yet I also realize it would be foolish to try to defend something I wrote up in 5 minutes as some sort of art that needs integrity.

Clearly this is not personal, and I know tchan has a good sense of humor when it comes to online advertising. I obviously didn't think it was a TOS violation; I wouldn't have posted it if I thought so. Still, I can see where he is coming from. In future I will avoid using product and brand names when I could avoid it.

My master plan has been foiled! ;-) And I would have gotten away with it too if it wasn't for those meddling red letters...

Actually I played the shill and promoted my brand, and no-one cared. Oh well, sub-master plan foiled! :D:D:D:D

This is a very classy post. I would have taken affront with the admin's actions. Your approach was better.

Oh my goodness! Is this what we've been talking about?
Even though I participated in the voting, I had no idea of the actual context and for most of the thread felt like I was missing out on some inside joke that everyone else was in on (because I don't have time to read every thread on this server)

I think what tchan did was perfectly fine and acceptable given the circumstances. On the other hand, I, myself would have just left it alone and ignored it altogether. (which again, probably explains why I voted on both ends of the spectrum). Overall, not a big enough deal to have spawned this whole meta-thread about it (though I can sympathize with a general need to discuss such actions from time to time).

Oh :-?

Makes me ask myself how and where Go teachers should tell their potential students that they are available … perhaps better use a straw wo/man who posts the link, like “ZOMG hey look what I've found!!!11”? ;-)

Should we perhaps discuss where the red line is in advertising stuff that IS RELATED TO GO?

Perhaps a board where teachers may introduce themselves?

We have an entire sub-forum devoted to the advertising of products. Why not have one for teachers?

My assumption is that it is just too hard to tell if someone is a good teacher. While product websites can be found to be reputable through one source or another, teachers can be anyone. Not every person advertising here would be a well known pro. On the contrary, most would be amateurs and most would be unknown.

If there was a way to prove that someone was reputable then maybe that forum would be a good addition to L19, but I would hate to see a member get burned by a dishonest teacher just so that the occasional honest one can be promoted here.

That was way too harsh. Breakfast has even a subforum for his sensei league. Alakazam wrote just 2 weeks ago that he is offering go lessons. I'm happy with both things, the admins apparently too. Time to change the TOS or at least create a subforum where such posts are allowed. I really feel bad for Redrose. I still remember her game against Tartrate on kgs. Greeting a pro on this forum like above is against all etiquette. JB, did you think she is a hoax?

Wow, this ticks me off. Why in the world would we want to discourage a professional go player from informing us about her services? What a great message to send about our forums. "L19: we bite our nose to spite our face." It's not like she's selling used cars.

It just make me wonder why there is even a sub forum called Teachers/Club Leaders if teachers are not allowed to offer services here.
Clearly there is a problem with the TOS in this case. I would say the mod did not overstep their authority though, they were just following the rules.

Agreed. At the very least that should be restored and the moderator should apologize to the poster.

The point of no advertising is not to stop useful posts on go stuff...

I want to disagree.
He should have been following the spirit of the law, not the letter of the law.
The TOS was not written to cover every potential issue in detail. This should have been a judgement call in the other direction.

IMO the mod should NOT resign. That's the first time completely disagree with him. But I prefer this place with his contributions and decisions than without them. The harm is done. No need for new one. Change the TOS.
