Newb here with some homemade gobans

General discussions about gobans, etc., go here. If you're selling go equipment, it should go in the Trading Post.

Newb here with some homemade gobans

Post by dracflamloc »

Hey all, new here to the forums and to go. I love random woodworking projects and thats why I originally was attracted to go. However I started reading up on the game and playing some online and really enjoyed it. I am trying to start a club in my area so I made a few boards and figured I'd share. I made a pine 19x19, and 13x13 as well as a red oak 19x19 and 9x9

Hope you find your players! If beautiful boards like that don't lure them in, what will? :D I envy your woodworking skill.

Your boards look incredible. And a warm welcome as well from me to this incredible game. Love your work! Let me know if you ever have any questions about the game or related material and I'll be happy to help!

Would you like to share the way you did them? I am thinking of making some boards myself, would be interesting to read the methods you used.

Sure, here is a write-up I did on the baduk subreddit:

I used the measurements here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Go_equipment#Board

Bought a pine "stair tread" at home depot for about $11. Then I cut, sanded and coated it with polyurethane. I drew in the lines with permanent marker and T-sqaure after the first coat dried and gave it another coat of poly. I used the inside of a washer to make consistent star points. Routed in some inset for a hinge to attach the two halves (though this isn't necessary, its perfectly playable to just push the two halves together). Lightly sand the top to smooth out the poly coat.

All things said and done I could have spent about the same amount on a cheap beginner set at a store or online, but I really hate that most of them in the $30 price range are done on particle board and have plastic pieces. This let me have two size boards of solid wood and these stones for under $30 total: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000Y9 ... UTF8&psc=1

There are also red oak stair treads available for about $28 that I may use for my next one.

I'm also tempted to use old pallet wood and make a 'reclaimed' board from that. It would require a bit more work and some wood glue, but would probably yield a pretty cool looking board.

Is there a reason the 9x9 doesn't have the Tengen spot?

Actually the flip side of the 9x9 has one with the tengen. Having never seen a real-life 9x9 board I just didn't see the point as its pretty obvious where the center is. Easy to add though :)

9x9 boards don't really have a single standard. I have seen 9x9 boards that lack tengen like yours. Ones that only have tengen. And ones that have all 5 points.

The only standard go board star points are for the 19x19 boards. 13x13, 9x9, and other sizes vary from maker to maker.
