Michael Redmond defeats Cho U!

Post by deja »

It appears that Michael Redmond defeated Cho U in the first round of the Agon Cup. I wasn't aware that Redmond was actively playing in tournaments anymore. This is certainly a significant win for Redmond, no?

I know he was also in the Tengen match this year, but I could not find out if he had been eliminated, or if the next game in the tournament simply hadn't been played.

He also just had an interview in the AGA E-journal discussing he most recent study strategies (which appear to be working).

EDIT: The win over Cho U. was by half a point. His latest study strategy was designed to remove all ambiguity from endgame calculation.

I would say that this is a significant win for him! He snapped Cho U's 6-game winning streak and advanced to the final eight for the second time this year (too bad that he lost to Yoda Norimoto in the Tengen). He will have another tough opponent in the next round, though: either Yamashita Keigo or Yuki Satoshi.

He actively plays in the leagues, playing well enough to not drop out of a few of them, but not well enough to become a challenger to the titleholders yet. Maybe this time though!

Beating Cho U is definitely a coup for Redmond, though he's managed to do it at least once before.

As for the Tengen, he lost to Yoda Norimoto in the 3rd round, or what you might call the quarterfinals. That's a good result for him, but not his best ever. He still participates in tournament--he's typically in the final preliminaries, but sometimes breaks into the main tournament.

Well, like my favourite (late) Kato Masao, maybe Michael Redmond also realized after giving commentaries in the WAGC, that he'd better win in the pro tournaments and have a busy playing schedule during the next year's WAGC :)
