Please give me some hints on my (~9kyu) game

Post by Taito »

Hello,

I'd really like some help from stronger players with this.
I really messed this game up. Seems my openings as white always turn out bad :/ Please tell me what I should have done better.
I didn't know how to hande the upper left corner so I thougt in the end I would give it up to get the left side and kill/hunt the black stones there but then they lived and I got almost nothing out of it. I got frustrated and tried some things but they also went nowhere so I counted and resigned. I'm thankfull for any advice.

I guess G5 would have been better on E12 but it seemed so small and defensive so I wanted to try it on a larger scale.. well... maybe that was dumb. What do you think? Could I have killed those inside-stones? I made a lot of passive moves there because I often lose this kind of fights because theres a cut somewhere and some of my stones get captured => opponent makes life. :/

Thanks in advance.

Hi Taito and Welcome !

I'm 17 kyu so not really strong... But your 6 is 6 spaces from your hoshi stone, that looks un unusual to me... 5 spaces is better I think like black did with 7

Also 24 looks to block on the wrong side to me... Maybe D3 ? But again I'm not strong So maybe wait for somme one stronger's review...

l3 was fine as there is space for a two space extension to the right. First problem was c8. Stop following your opponent around: he should have played d14 so you should play there to make powerful shape. Also c6 is inefficient with d10 already there. And d6 after that was even more inefficient.

:w6: is okay, as it signals that white wants to make the lower side less valuable.

With :w24:, blocking on the other side is my first instinct as well, but if black ends in sente, with :w6: low and far, he can reduce the bottom quite effectively on the next move with a shoulder hit or the like, so perhaps this direction is better in that respect. On the other hand, as Uberdude mentioned, white looks kind of inefficient.

A few comments on the opening. :)

You played a good opening for your level. You took a long time on a number of opening plays which were good. I hope that that instills some confidence. :)

For study, may I commend :w38:, :w40:, :w42:, and especially :w44:. You took over a minute for a number of plays, yet in a tricky situation you found a bad move in 6 seconds. Better to have taken 6 minutes.

Wow you're so fast!

Well, I played :w6: to reduce blacks potential on the lower side.

Thanks to your comments I can see now that :w20: was not good.
In the game I had the feeling that :b17: and :b19: were like black trying to be everywhere at the same time and that I should somehow take advantage of that but kind of panicked about my stone in the middle although it wasn't in danger.

I agree the upper left corner looks better with F16 instead of F17, I should have played that (at least I had thought about it - but I was more concerned about defending the corner from C17 - which I knew would be played because I knew my opponent well enough). Maybe even then the high move would have been more helpfull.

Do you think if I played :w42: on E12 the game would have been okay for white or is White already behind at that point?

Thank you so much for your help!

If the Black stones on the upper left side die a dog's death, then White has the lead. :)
