( if 2 at 'a' then 3 at 'b' and 5 at 3 etc )

Well for sure not 2 at 'a', that is unthinkable. Up to :w3: in your main variation though, there isn't much else other than to play H3 and eat :w1:. Trying to break out with a move like G6 will only strengthen the outside. While this entire exchange may feel painful for Black, it's also worth noting that there were 3 White stones at the bottom against my single stone, and the situation you pose is where I get another move elsewhere (so there should be a Black stone around C11 or something). In a sense, it's like White is investing 4 moves on 1 stone, therefore I can't expect an even result. Living sealed in is fair, especially if I get the wedge in the left.

I'm a bit divided on whether this move is an overplay or not. However I'm terrible at what they call "paratrooper" moves, or moves that aim to reduce rather than invade moyos. Yeah yeah, I'm aware of concepts like sector lines and all that jazz, but I don't think it's always that simple - especially in this case. The way I look at it right now is that White can only pressure the last move from one direction, such as 'a' or 'b'. I have plenty of enough space to make a two-space extension from my stone regardless of which way he chooses to pressure, so life shouldn't be too hard to find here. The problem is making sure I don't get squished from all directions and eek a tiny sealed group that lives while White gets super thickness and influence everywhere as a result of the attack.

I wish that he would play with such recklessness in his game against me.

This feels like an overplay. First, it is aji keshi, for the natural move at 'a' helps patch white's weak spot at 'b'. Second, it is aji keshi on the lower side too, for after black's probable extension to 'c', white will block, and this protects the cut at 'd' which would otherwise be a problem after black plays 'e'.

Last, white may play something like 'f', limiting the options of the marked stones if/when white cuts at 'g'.

I honestly do not feel like this is overplay at all. In fact, I feel that this is the right move in this case. Might even be the ONLY move. Anything else is too slow, and this fight has been building up from the beginning.

This may be an overplayy, but I don't know that "aji keshi" is a fair criticism. You have to "kesh" your aji sometime, and if it is not a disaster, this invasion will be bigger than other ways of exploiting that aji.

I do not understand the critiques of this move. Both the upper and the lower white group are missing an extension, and Black can extend twice in each direction, so it is a natural and big move.

The only thing I do not understand is how Black intends to answer H15. If I was Black, I would perhaps have played J15 and regarded C11 and Q11 as miai.

With this in mind, I would not call C11 an overplay, but perhaps a bit premature. I might be misassessing H15, though.

White can play 'h', which makes it hard to get a second eye along the edge. If 'e' is sente to cut at 'd', then black lives easily with 'i'. But if the cut has been covered, then white plays 'i' himself, and black is seeking an eye in the center of the board.

I don't think this is an overplay... but...

With my experiences of playing against Gus, this sort of thing is something he's completely fine with.

If I were to play a move like this, Gus will somehow use an attack on this group to kill the H14 stones.

His move on the left is very good, perhaps I was a bit too greedy. I can't figure out any decent way to attack it, so I'm just going to tenuki and attack the bottom group. After my move, he only has one eye, and must run away. After 4, it's up to him how he's going to run away, he can play 'a','b' or 'c'.

This move clears the fog up dramatically and allows me to see what White's intention is. His last move is very menacing and pressures my bottom group, squeezing away eyespace potential on the right side of the corner group. I want to know whether he aims to go for the kill (which means he will play 'a') or if he simply aims for profit and leave the option for me to live (which means he will play 'b', since 'c' would then be sente and give me time to play 'd', the crucial move that gives me two eyes). White 'c' is not a threat if I respond with 'b'.

How he responds will also give me guidance in how I should try to exploit the faulty connection between the two marked White stones ( :wc: ). While dying is a hazard, I don't want to suffer the second worst fate either: living sealed.

When I hit move 40, I will go over this move I made more extensively because I'm certain many will claim it is some sort of outrageous aji keshi when it is not. I can only hope that if stronger players are watching this game, that they will stand by my side and reassure other observers who may question this move that it is fine...hopefully. Then again, it's nearly 3:00am here and I lost a lot of money in a poker game, so maybe I'm on tilt and being delusional :D.

I do think that Mr. Price will indeed play either a or b in Solch's analysis.

But of course, being Violence, I would play c.

His move is just a probe to test what I'll do, seems fine. I added all the important variations below.

If he tries to pull his stone out, it's a simple loose ladder.

Warning, geeky and possibly bad analogy ahead: If anyone ever watched the anime "Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann", I feel like Kamina and Simon right now. You know, in the first episode where they try to dig out of their underground village and see the surface world? Right now the center is the surface world, and I need to find a way to dig out to prevent getting sealed into the corner. Of course, this comes with quite some risk - if I do try to break out and fail, White will likely gain magnificent thickness and I'll still be sealed in. There's no doubt White will gain profit from what's about to happen, I just need to make sure it's constrained to a minimum. Perhaps the price to play the wedge was too high? We'll see.

I think the move I played is the best way I can try to poke my head out into the outside world. It's certainly the safest because it holds hands with F4 through the risky journey to the outside, but this comes at the cost of being the slowest move. I've considered moves like G6 or H5 but found them to be problematic because they can get cut off from F4 so easily. I also considered wussing out and playing G2 but that's just too dreadful.

Believe in me, who believes in you!

Yours is a kosumi that pierces the heavens!
