New dynasty

Post by John Fairbairn »

A small but interesting landmark seems to have been missed. Michael Redmond appears to have become the first western pro to have led another player to the pro ranks. His pupil 15-year-old Nyu Eiko has become a pro in Tokyo after qualifying through the special women's test. Nyu had already made waves in the amateur world.

It's intriguing that she has the same surname as Redmond's Chinese wife and pro sister-in-law. There's a strong hint at a family connection there. Anyone know?

Nyu is his niece. She was the runner up in the Children's Meijin last year.

For what it's worth Nyu Li Li, Redmond's sister-in-law, was Go Seigen's amanuensis for many years. And Redmond's wife Nyu Xian Xian was a Chinese pro 3-dan before they married.
