Sakata Eio's Books

Post by hl782 »

Hi everyone. My dad (a tygem 8/9 Dan) told me that the 5 books he said were his "Go bibles" for achieving his current rank were

1) Kikyung Joongmyo (Gokyo Shumyo)
2) Hyunhyun Kikyung (Gengen Gokyo)
3) Segoe/Go Seigen Tesuji Dictionary
4) Fujisawa Shukos Tesuji Dictionary
5) Sakata Eio's Go Series & Sakata Eio's Tsumego Collection (It's called JuOk Hilgee in Korean, which roughly translates to Life&Death Gems)

Now - 1, 2, 3 and 4 are all easy to obtain. But I can't find copies of the Sakata Eio Go Series anywhere. I see that his series is available in Chinese (http://senseis.xmp.net/?SakataEioPerfectWeiqiCollection), but I cannot read it at all so that's of no good.

Are there an English translation of his books anywhere? I know that there are some of Sakata's books in english (Tesuji & Antisuji of Go, Killer of Go, Middlegame of Go, etc etc.) - Are those books the translation of Sakata's Go Series? Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The Sakata Go series is almost certainly the Sakata no Go series, which is dan level, not the Killer of Go series, which is kyu level. It seems that the series was reprinted in paperback in 2004, and is available through Amazon Japan.

It's just a wild guess, but there could be some translated excerpts in the British Go Jounals. There are some gems hidden for sure: http://www.britgo.org/bgj/bgj.html

It seems that the OP can read Korean. I would guess that the Sakata books would have been translated into Korean at some point, as most Japanese go books were/are translated into both Chinese and Korean. It is possible that the Korean version is out of print now. Maybe a used book search service in Korea could find the books.

In Chinese the Sakata no Go- series is bundled together with Sakata no Go II and Mastery of Victory and Defeat into Sakata Eio Perfect Weiqi Collection.
