Re: Mainstream Go Sightings
Just zapped into “Fist of Legend” (1994, a martial arts movie with Jet Li) on arte (French-German TV)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fist_of_Legend
Don’t know about all of EUrope, but French and Germans should be able to view it for the next two weeks in the mediatheque: German, French
There’s a Go scene somewhere between 1:10:00 and 1:18:00, maybe there are more that I have missed.

Re: Mainstream Go Sightings
In episode 16 of Shirobako, a character mentions that she was in the Go club in high school, and a bit later there are two brief shots of a Go board.

Hi LocoRon, very pretty; thanks.LocoRon wrote:two brief shots of a Go board.
Do you happen to remember if the two were completely still shots,
or were they "animated" -- with the camera doing more than just 2D panning or rotation ?
Just curious.
I ask, because if the scene was CG, then it's trivial to have 3D motion;
but if it was hand drawn, then any 3D motion would be a ton of work for the animators.

They were mostly static; there were two shots of the same board and stones position from different camera angles, with perhaps a bit of panning (unless I am remembering incorrectly). The second shot (pictured) also had a hand reach over the board to place a stone (I timed the screenshot to capture the full board, without the hand obstructing it).

Re: Mainstream Go Sightings
Not mainstream (well, a lot of people visit this town during the summer), but I saw this figure in the front window of a board game/gift shop (they had the usual run-of-the-mill board games inside, not even a go board as far as I could tell) in Mirepoix, France. Looks like white plays horrible, but it seems to be a 9x9 board, playing go (playing on intersections, the way the rightmost player holds the stone)

Here is a blog quote I just read today.
Not what I would call a strong move, but I'll let that pass.
