Chinese opening resources

Post by skydyr »

Is there a good book or other resource about the chinese opening these days? I know of Kato Masao's book, but I'm hoping for something a little more up to date.

An Younggil has nice commentaries about modern pro games, you have to hunt through a bit to find Chinese openings specifically, but I think it's worth it. Check the commentaries on the Gu Li - Lee Sedol Jubango, I think at least a few were chinese openings and the commentary is detailed. Here's two recent ones I found:

Chinese as white:

If it has to be English, there are none I know of.

Dictionary of Modern Fuseki may cover a bit more, but that is not a 'modern' book anymore.

For what I call the fighting chinese (approach white's lower left and get knight's move answer first) there is a chapter of several dozen diagrams in Kim Sung Rae's New Openings vol 3 (only available in Korean afaik). Teachers like Guo Juan or Hwang Inseong probably have saved video lectures about them if you have access to those collections. Maybe badukmovies does too?

The upcoming book from gogameguru on the Lee-Gu match will supposedly have more extensive coverage of modern opening ideas than the existing commentaries so that might be worth checking once it comes out.

Inseong has some lectures on the Chinese opening. He made a new lecture a few years after the first one, since there have been some new developments.

I seem to recall that he doesn't really like the Chinese opening, though. In particular, since it's been so researched, both players just play out what they know, and the opening has less room for creativity than some other opening patterns.
